i know this might sound a bit stupid, but how do i get an animated gif as my avatar?

You make one.
I use Animation Shop, but I bet there are other programs as well.

The forums has a size limit 50x50, but as long as it is that big, you should be fine.

You can use any .gif file as long as it is 50 x 50
