How do you become BETA tester?

How do people become game beta testers? For example Valve says, they're fine tuning the game by watching how gamers play the game. Obviously those beta players played the game from start to finish.

Do you go to the developers office and sign up? Or they randomly choose people and say "hey kid, wanna beta test our game?"

How developers can trust them that they would not slip any info? What does the contract agreement usually state? I'm just curious.

It depends...Sometimes they have application forms on websites. Sometimes they will use family members and friends, other times they go to people who do that kind of thing for a living.

Usaually they have a non disclosure agreement which basically says if you talk about this game to anyone not part of the beta testing or development team, then they will take legal action against you.

There is also Fileplanet "beta testing", where you basically get to play betas of games, with crash and bug submissions, but it is not like the true sense, where you go into the developer sit down and play the game, with the head of the studio asking you ,personally, questions about their project.

there's a company near my house... ibeta or something like that... the whole place specializes in beta testing for software. both games and business software. so that's another option.

Fill in your registration cards, seriously. For example the Beta tester of HL1 where chosen from people who sent back the registration cards.
