I just recently put this comptuer together:

CPU: Intel P4 2.6Cghz with Cooler Master HYPER 6 heatsink
RUNNING AT 3.256ghz with 1ghz FSB

Motherboard: Abit AI7 i865 pe with bios 17

Ram: 4x256mb Single Sided ( !! ) Komusa HYPER RAM PC4000 running at 250mhz 1:[email protected]

Video: Sapphire 9800 pro 128mb with VGA silencer @ 460/760

I hope to run HL2 @ 1280x1024 with 4xAA and 8xAF...think its possible?

Looks good, but did it really need a new thread?

You should run HL2 at those specs but at or near maximum detail. You have a very good all round system

Meh, people spend too much money and time on their computers. Mine is simply a means to an end and the end is to play HL2.

Your OCing the processor a lot. I'd take it down till you really need it.

Edit: having taken a look at that cpu cooler, I could very well be wrong. ;)

The temp between stock and overclocked is 2*

That's a little optimistic. You'd be able to pull that off with an x800 card, but not smoothly with a 9800 Pro.

Hm..I might have a 6800GT by the time this game comes out, so its all good. :E

Holy Christ!

That CPU cooler is bigger than my PSU...

He's got that 9800 pro clocked past 9800xt speeds, he could pull it off. Though a 6800GT would be great.

9800XT are only 10% better than 9800 pro's. I stand by Abom's statement.

I know they are, but I think he may be able to pull it off. Maybe not, some of the latest benches like from the VST show the 9800 pro not doing as good as it was praised to by Valve.

Wow really? Right now my 9800p is at 485/760, which has a 100mhz OC on the core and 40mhz on the core. I ran Doom 3 @ 1280x1024 high details and averaged 35-50fps :cheese: No AA of course, but it did have 8xAF on by default, so im sure HL2 wont even strain my card. BTW xbox made me used to 30fps, so i dont sit around counting the numbers, as long as its smooth, im good. And I just saw the Firing Squad bench for HL2, the 9800xt was doing quiet well and my card runs circles around the XT.

I mean...how many 9800p's can do this:

Then get the hell off the hardware forum. Computers are a hobby to most of us here, we enjoy spending the money on them. I don't play gams nearly enough to justify my system and the amount of money I pour into it, but I just love having a quick computer and I love spending my hard earned neddies on it.

Hmm... I believe the screen-size limits him for that. I know I'll be able to run everything I'll want to with my 3.0 ghz Sapphire 9800 Pro :)

Well look at this benchmark:

http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=1193&s=3

It doesn't do bad exactly, but after Valve was saying how a 9800 pro will run max settings 1600x1200 at 60fps with eye candy turned on, well in the VST it's running only 27fps at 1600x1200 with 4xAA 8xAF. And after promoting ATi so much, it's very suprprising to see the 5950 turning in the same frame rates as the 9800 pro, and at 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF, the 5950 beats the 9800 pro 25fps to 32fps. Actually it beats the 9800 pro in every test with 4xAA and 8xAF. At 1024x768 it doubles the fps! This is definitely surprising. But I now that I think of it I'm pretty sure that CS:S didn't have any shader options enabled yet so the 5950's performance may just be because there are no shaders yet.

I dont think anyone expected the 9800p to run@1600x1200 with 4xAA and 8xAF lol, but yeah, the performance isnt as good as it should be. I dont have to worry, my 9800p is clocked 100mhz past the one in that bench and i'll be playing at 1280x1024 4xaa 8xaf or 1600x1200 no aa 8xaf

Those nVidia FX cards are running on DX8, where their ATI counterparts are on DX9. If the FX cards were running DX9 those bencmarks would tell a different story.
