How does the grav gun rank against other weapons + grav gun tactics

HL2 is my fav multiplayer deathmatch so far. I think the gravity gun brings a lot of balance to the game, as well as being totally unique amongst fps and wicked fun to use. It doesn’t use ammo, so it is equally effective even at respawn and it’s a great counter to campers. It’s also saved my ass so many times when I was at 1 health and low ammo.

I was just wondering what tactics you guys have found useful with the grav gun. There many tactics that can be used besides just plain throwing exploding barrels. Also, I was thinking about how the grav gun ranks when compared to the "conventional" guns in the game. I guess much of it depends on what you have to throw/use for cover. In the right situation it can be one of the most devastating weapons in the game. I would say it’s most useful in close range, but open environments. It has a major weakness against long range attacks and exploding weapons.

That always cleans up a room in 5 seconds flat....

And you can block the crossbow with the table too.. Maybe not so much the RPG though

But the gravgun i think is most effective in smaller rooms, with tables, and when you have not much life left it is always a handy option...

In some cases, it's crap. Like an MP7 without grenades.
But it's also occasionally awesome like an MP7 with grenades.
It all depends on what you find lying around.

Speaking of which, am I the only one who thinks you should be able to catch RPG rockets with the gravgun?

But i would imagine you would have to be pretty friggin' accurate to catch one of those suckers flying towards you, especially when being controlled by the laser guidance

It is deadly, but everything else is just deadly-er.

90% is just crazy. How the hell do you pull that off? I guess if you camp the right places it can be done. I guess it also depends on the map.

Hmm, I just had a thought; can you pic up live nades with the grav gun? I know that shooting a live nade can make it bounce out of the way.

It's a good wep... tables, cabinets, 'sploding stuff, and shelves work like a charm. There is satisfaction in getting a kill with the smaller items.. like the toilets and sinks.

It's not too hard to dodge / kill someone using it... either bring yours out and hold secondary fire so you catch what they throw more often than not... or try to primary fire it back to them.

If you don't feel like using that... you can bounce a bow shot off the ground in front of their feet and nail them with it.. or just spam the hell out of them with nades / mp7 nades / pulse balls.

On dm_overwatch, just camp down at the bottom in the pulse rifle room with a table/kitchen shelf and slam everyone who walks in/spawns.

Most satisfying thing to kill with for me is the plug. It's got limited range because of the cord so if and when you do get a kill with it ...it just feels so good!

I've gotten a bunch of crazy kills with various objects. Pylons, lamps, keyboards...ahh..too many to think of. It's also cool to kill with those objects too heavy to pick up.

My favorite is still the melon, since they don't take very long to be destroyed and it's such a stupid item to kill someone with.

when i play DM, im a grav gun whore!, its the one weapon that constantly makes me giggle when i spank a filing cabinet or explosive barrel upside someones head.

Yeah, I tend to be quite reluctant when it comes to actually taking out a gun. It just doesn't compare to flinging a toilet at someone and seeing it break into pieces as they fall to the floor and you've racked up another kill.

Yesterday on the HL2.net server (some of you may have been there) I picked up one of those blue wooden carts in Lockdown and absolutely whored with it for 16 kills without dying. It was the same cart everytime too and I think I only drew my gun once :E

an interesting strategy if there aren't to many people in the overwatch is to pick up explosive barrels and lob them above the building to take out rocket campers. I swear it wierded me out the first time i was up there and notcied a barrel fall down and explode right next to me.

grav gun is clearly the best weapon evar

I use it 99% of the time (including nade launching) and i ussually top the server with a 3-1 ratio, unless theres insanely good xbow or revolver players in the server

ive taken out whole 6 player teams with one radiator when they all spawned in that charger room in lockdown. scary and frantic as hell.

That is just nutz, I am not that good at the game yet and get owned a lot on public severs. I just need to get my Mojo back I guess. I have to practise this "toilet/radiator" tactic.

90% is very possible. I just realize that the gravgun can be as effective as any other weapon and is infinitely more fun.

And camping is boring. I let the magnum and rocket launcher hogs take that title.

I run around dodging bullets and ramming toilets into the face of those who are trying to shoot at it.

Sometimes I take out my gun when there's nothing to pick up nearby or if I have a powerful gun that gives me free kills. But the rest of the time, gravgun time.

I also get the majority of my kills with the gravity gun. For some reason, all the servers I join I end up leading by a sizeable margin.. (Usually 2, even 3:1 kill/death.) One of the main things I do that lets me do this is:

When I see two or more people fighting, or want to kill someone with a better weapon fast, I pull out a grenade, right click it on the ground in front of me.. fast-switch to manipulator, grab it, time it just right and toss it to explode right when it hits the person. Gets me the majority of my kills every time.

I think the best would be picking up a live nade that someone else threw at you, then having it blow up in their face :naughty:

Did anyone happen to be on the server when someone dared me to kill everyone with cars in overwatch? I did it too and still stayed top of the leaderboard. I find DM so easy. I want some real competition. However, it is the only game that has ever come naturally to me.
