i had always thought that the term "nappy hair" was describing a hairstyle, like afro or crew cut, or even chili bowl.

Adjectives such as ?hard?, ?kinky?, ?nappy,? or ?woolly? are also used to describe natural hair. This hair is typically tightly coiled and soft to the touch.

so where is the offense? I found a children's book called, "nappy hair" and in Happy Feet they use the term nappy hair. (it is rated G, all audiences)

there's a huge thread on this very subject ..no need to start a new one ..oh and read the thread; your opinion of whether it's offensive or not is meaningless

"Nappy hair" usually means hair that is unkept, unbrushed, not cared for, etc., usually curly hair, and usually used to refer to black women whose hair are in said condition.

Like stern said there is already a thread on it.

It's all in the context. Apply the term to a woman's basketball team whose players are mostly black and use it as an adjective for hoes and you don't have to be a english teacher to know what is meant by it.

Not being immersed enough in contemporary American culture to know exactly, I can only presume that the expression is offensive for the same reason the word 'paki' in Britain is offensive - regardless of whether the actual word is an insult or not. In that particular case it's merely an abbreviation, like 'brit', but the social and cultural baggage it carries lends it a weight, one that you'd be very stupid to ignore simply because the word itself is seemingly harmless.

Wheres the other thread people are referring to? I can't find it.

Um maybe its just regions but nappy hair here isnt racist and it doesnt only apply to black people its about hair. I'm not just saying that to be an argumentative annoyance either, it's true.

If you described someone's hair as nappy here and they got offended that shit would be taken as really weird by everyone else even if theyre black or not.

Again, its all in the context. I really don't understand why people are trying to defend this. If you listen to the context of what he said it is pretty clear as to what he meant. He called a bunch of young educated girls hoes because of their skin color. Why is anyone trying to down play that?

percieved offense trumps regional definitions every time ..and really who cares? it was the parent company's decision to fire Imus, we have absoutely zero say in the matter ..they were losing money due to advertisers jumping ship so they fired him ..the same would happen in any other industry

You also left out black and ho

EDIT: and for ****sakes its not like it's this guys first offense, I am amazed at the amount of people who are trying to justify this guys bigotry.
