...would it take for someone with absolutely NO experience of coding/mapping whatsoever but who knows about computers to design a map based on a building they know?

i only ask because i was speaking to a friend today and they said it would be awesome to play halflife2 deathmatch in our physics dept building, which is 5 floors and about 200yrds long. would it be possible to even do something like this?

Possible indeed, but depending on the amount of detail you want to put in it, it may take quite some time. So that combined with no experience seems like it will take a couple months if you work on it diligently. Thats my opinion anyway

cheers for the input, there maty be a few of us prpared to put some hours in to it, could you build somthing like each floor seperately and combine them later, ie: we each do a floor, or not?

i'll have to speak to a few people about it i guess:)

It could be done.

All of the files would have to be transferred onto one computer and you'd have to copy/paste each floor into one main map file.

To make it look good, you'd all have to be using the same dimentions for the floors, same texture styles, etc, so you'd have to do some planning before each of you just started making a floor.

The whole idea of splitting up floors is good for time but can be bad to design. Be sure to follow a pattern on all floors or else you'll fail, misserably.
