How do everyone, at the moment I have a Core 2 E6400, Your bog standard, everyday, dual core processor.

Its served me fine for the past 6 months, but when I went on dabs.com to buy my 8800gts (which practically runs all games smoothly as long as you stick with dx9 drivers and don't use any of that beta crap ) I decided to see how much processors have come down. I was astonished to find that a Q6600 @ 2.4GHz was at the price of 173.38 pounds

This was a shocker considering that, about 6 months ago, I bought my dual core at the same place for 140 pounds.

If Dabs are doing it this cheap, I'll be able to purchase it when my salary comes in at the end of the month, but perhaps you can help. I would like to know if any of you forum goers have seen it any cheaper elsewhere.

This was the page that I was looking at for Quads

The price of the Q6600 will half to $266 July 22nd. The price of the Q6600 will half to $266 July 22nd. The price of the Q6600 will half to $266 July 22nd. I've said this way too much in my time.

Seriously though, it's a hell of a deal, but since you already have an e6400, I seriously doubt it'll be worth it, even at that price. You just won't notice a difference. Unless you do some really out of the ordinary computing, but as you're probably just a gamer, probably not.

Intel is going to introduce new cpus soon btw, that might outshine the q6600 bigtime.

A hell of a deal. But do you use any app or play any game (Or any combination) that will put to use all 4 cores yet?
Not sure what is so ordinary about the performance of a Core 2 Duo E6400.

I get paid on the 25th of this month anyway, so if it comes down in price on the 22nd, I'm sold

But to anser your question, theres not much at the moment that I need it for, but I'm going to buy for the sake of future-proofing.

I know that Alan Wake will make use of those extras cores if you have them, I'm sure I heard that HL: EP2 will support the quads, and, well, Crysis :D

Yes but do know that you're only buying two extra cores. For everything that does not support 4 cores specifically, it's not gonna be noticeably faster (only about 12%).

It really isn't worth it over the E6400, wait at least 1 year, I would wait 2 before buying a new CPU.

Aye but those games that support quad core are not even here yet.

You buy now and you miss out on possible price drops or new cores in between now and then. And even then when they are out you have to think if it is worth it to you for the extra price and few games use it or low performance increase (like Brick was saying).

I'm sure most people will eventually be getting quad cores. They are good stuff but you just have to weight it out and see when you want to enter the market.

If you were buying a new PC then it would be a good idea to make it quad core for future proofing. But if you are just upgrading your current Core 2 Duo system it seems really early to be doing that.

Yeah, lot of demand puts that price back up for online retailers.
Zipzoomfly has it for under $300.

It's only $266 each if you buy 1000 of them, OEM.

I got mine for ?160ish
