How many games has got 96% of PC Gamer. Is it just Half-Life and Half-Life 2?

In PC Gamer UK, Half-Life and Half-Life have got 96%

Someone said Quake II got 96% but I'm sure I've read something in PC Gamer that said only Half-Life ever got 96%

Someone else said the peeps on the PC Gamer forums were saying Civilization 2 also got 96% too in PC Gamer (UK).

Which is a good indication, because it's a supremely fantastic game.

As I said in the other post, this is great news.

The same as HL1??? That means it's absolutely amazing. Now the waiting begins...

civ2, grand prix 2, quake 2, halflfie all got 96. alpha centuri got 98 but might have been a different magazine

I have the review compendium and the only games to get 96% were HL and Quake 2.

No. In PC Gamer UK Mag. Only 2 games have got 96%, that is Half-Life and Half-Life 2. No other game has recieved a higher review.

I swear my posts are invisible to some people...

Read the link. Civ 2 got 96% in PC Gamer UK. It's confirmed by Game Rankings.

Civilisation 2, Quake 2 and Half-Life. And apparently, Half-Life 2 is forth game to do so now.

Sorry, the waiting has been going on for a year :|

Ok, I need to find that book now.

It's been confirmed by Game Rankings. They don't post false scores from sites/magazines.

Yeah, I've confirmed it. I've just looked at a reviews database that comes with PC Gamer.

Although 3 other games have got 96%, it's still been 6 years since the last game did, which says something.

(I'm not sure if I agree with the Quake II score, though. But that's from a pre Half-Life time)

It is a great score. The likes of Quake 2, Civilization 2 and Half-Life were all genre-defining games in their time, that had impact on the entire gaming world. If Half-Life 2 is classed amongst that elite by PC Gamer then I'll be happy.

I agree... If it's been six years, then high scores evidently aren't given out lightly by the magazine.

Yeah. Quake 2 was THE game back then. And Half-Life = based on Quake 2 tech.

do u think hl2 will be more fun if they would have given a score of 97%?

yes.

by a bagillion ;)

its still a bloody good score none the less, just woulda been nice if it beat HL by atleast 1

hmm, so 96% in PCGamer UK is a really really high score it seems...PCGamer US gives higher (less good) ratings imo

Kinda have to agree with this feeling. Think people take the reviews a bit too seriously (especially the final score stuff).

96, 97, etc...they are just opinions, after all, and really don't mean we will like one game better because it got a 1% (or whatever) higher score. And, even if HL2 got 50%, it really wouldn't mean we'd all hate it or that it was bad...it would just mean the reviewer thought that was what it was worth.

I think we all have played games which have got GREAT reviews and disliked them; and games which got TERRIBLE reviews and loved them. Same goes for movies or music or women/men or anything. It's all in the eye of the beholder...

actually it was based on quake1 tech...
actually it was based on both.
they licensed Q1 engine, then after Q2 they licensed that engine too iirc.

"It is fundamentally just a heavily modified Quake 1 engine. There are about 50 lines of code from the Quake 2 engine, mostly bugs fixes to hard problems that Carmack found and fixed before we ran into them."

not true, according to the massive gamespot article. hl1 was entirely based on a heavily modified quake 1 engine. that's it.

edit: thanks subtlesnake. that was teh interesting.

Im happy with the score but ill give it my own opinion once i play the game.

really though half life 2 got a 100%, its just like the olympics where they ALWAYS leave a little room for improvement

This thread is a simple discussion on whether Pc Gamer UK has given out 96% to any other games but we have:

People saying only 1 other game
People saying only 3 other games
People saying only 2 other games
People denying certain games got 96% when they did
People discussing the value of a 1% difference
People giving scores from other magazines
People saying HL was based on a Quake 1 engine
People saying HL was based on a Quake 2 engine
People saying HL was based on both Quake 1 and Quake 2 engine

No wonder there is no world peace, humans can't seem to communicate. :D

I though civ number 1 got 97% odd but my memory is failling in my old age. Any one know what dune2 got? Anyway quake 2 single player was dull. Question is will HL2 really have the effect on games that the orignal did?

From the PC gamer review book, 1993-2003:
hl1- 96%
max payne 95%
quake 3 - 95%
grim fandango- 95%
medal of honour- 95

and those are the uk elite.
so, half-life 2 will be good right?

I want a game that the British think is more than 1% better than a game the Americans think is 1% not as good as HL2. Get it?

Doom 3 got a 95. Hopefully HL2 gets like 104, 'cause 1% better makes baby Jesus prone in a corner with an MP40 and wait to shoot your ankles off.*

* This message hard at work making 53% more sense than the average HL2.net post.
