How many is too many?

does anybody know the poly-count of some of the weapons we saw in the tech demo, or how many will run well in Hl2?
 
Dont qoute me but what ive read is

Main Characters: EI Gorden/Alex = up to 7000
Enemys: EI Combine Soilders = 4000
First Person Weapons: EI Guns :p = Around 2000-3000
 
i think the general consensus is that poly counts is an obsolete thought. By that i mean you could have 200k models and not crash the software. however when your talking about a Multiplayer mod you have to consider your target audience. if you are targeting everyone then i think short_fuse has the numbers about right. though perhaps a little high on the Weapon. and we should make the assumption that 3rd person will be half to three quarters that to ensure optimal Frame rates on mid end machines.
 
i am doing all the models (wepons) for our MOD in 1500 faces, later there will be bullit's added (not much i know) and the hand models (that will be more than 500 faces i guess), so in total we will have about 2000 faces.
