i was just curious because it seems pretty easy to use, but you can do a ton with it.

Milkshape 3D's my personal preference. Just couldn't get to grips with XSI.

I'm using XSI, but not the ModTool.

The ModTool convinced me on it though

what's the difference between the modtool and "normal" XSI

£300 for one.

The list of ModTool limitations is listed on the Softimage site, but the main ones are watermarked rendering, an 8000poly limit (I think the highest HL2 character was about 8500), and the project manager seems disabled to me.

but you can still make models and export them so you can import them into a mod? right?

Yeah, the ValveSource xsi addon is there to be downloaded on the Softimage site, and it comes with the SDK...You just install that and you can export smd's and do everything you can do in the ModTool....and more obviously...

I think it's pretty good and does its job well. Features are good and the workflow is great. My old gripe, as usual, are the menus and layout. My 1024 by 768 resolution just doesn't cut it anymore.

;(

Yeah, my computer doesn't run anything above 1024*768, so it just doesn't fit on my screen. Milkshape does me just fine, anyways.

By the way, for the people running with lower resolutions, you can still run XSI properly, since V4 the right tool bars can be closed down by right clicking on them, just thought you guys should know that, and the took bars on the left, you can get to everything there by using the menu bar and right clicking ;) .

I did that by accident the other day...scared the life outta me! :)

I actually felt the most confortable using XSI than any other 3d application, i use it for everything, except particles, for that i use Houdini, but that's another thing ;)

I just really clicked with XSI really, I think it was Desty's Colt tutorial really. And I got used to the key mapping really quickly, not a fan of 3dsmax's. I struggle using Hammer now though! I keep moving the camera backwards by accident and allsorts of stuff! :S
