at the moment my pc has 512mb ram but im bout to put another 512 in it would this reduce loading times and by how much/is it worth it.

im also not sure if its a good idea to mix different ramm sticks together.

and sum1 told me the more ram you have the more unstable your machine gets ie; more crashes is this true as im thinking of adding 4gb of ram to make it 5gb of ramm good idea or not??

sorry long post.

Why would you wan't to add that much RAM? There's no real point. 1GB is substantial enough and if you can add another 512MB onto that then do it but 4GB of RAM is just pointless. As for mixing RAM, do you mean RAM speeds, as in PC3200, 2700, 2100 etc? It's best to have 2 sticks of the same speed .e.g. 2X 512MB PC3200 because it will run much better than if you had 1X 512MB PC3200 and 1X 512MB PC2700 as it would run at the slower RAM speed. I have 1GB of Corsair XMS PC3200 which i got for £80 from Sweden (because i'm jammy) and it's fine for me, even with my Dual Channel slots on my Gigabyte motherboard which can have little or no speed increases, maybe 5%-10% so the full answer is no it's not worth it.

well, im not sure cause I havent tried doing this yet. But, I think the more RAM you have is teh best!

Windows XP can support a maximum of 4GB of RAM. I've never heard of more RAM making a system unstable. Remember that you will have to relax the memory timings when loading multiple sticks of RAM unless they're rated for extreme speed.

You won't need more than 1gb of ram if the only thing you're doing is gaming. If you're doing video editing, or you're editing extreamly large images, howerver, more ram is only good.

And that ram is very good, but you should make sure that it will work in your motherboard, if your computer is about 2 years old, that ram will not work in your computer. You should check your motherboard manual to see if that ram will work with it.

I think 1 GB is fine, but if you run ALOT of programs at once that suck memory, ethier go 1.5 or 2 Gigs.

I don't think there will ever be a situation that more than 1GB is needed. As it is, I think 512 is just fine.

I have 2GB, which I don't really think provides much benefit for games, but for stuff like Photoshop it really helps as some of my files that I work on are at least 1.5GB. And even then some of the image has to be stored on the scratch disks (hard drive). 5GB does sound really excessive though - I'm not sure if you'll really see enough benefit to justify the expense.
