I've been seeing online tutorials on how to do a dropped D tuning, but nothing seems to work. All I know is that your 6th String (Thickest) must sound like the D String (4th one), but you have to drop it down to that note. I can't seem to drop my 6th string to that note, as the string gets all flabby and impossible to play. I thought I was doing it wrong.

So I looked up another tutorial, and it says that the 7th fret of your 6th string (Thickest) must sound the same as your fifth string open. I tried it, and it sounds wrong.

Anybody know how to do a dropped D?

Just downtune the top E string so it sounds the same pitch as the D string (third from the top), if you have any sense of sound its as simple as pie to do, if done correctly you should be hitting proper sounding power chords on the top three strings (providing they are still intune). The more you do it, you will able to downtune to D instantly as you just have hunch of what it sounds like.

If you are really find it hard, find a song that is drop D, and find a note played on bottom string, keep adjusting the tuning down until it sounds exactly how that note is meant to sound, if that makes sense.

Code:
E|----------------
B|----------------
G|----------------
D|--------7-------
A|----------------
D|----7-----------

When the seventh fret on the higher D string is played and sounds like a clean octave of the lower D, you've got your drop D brosef.

Alternatively use http://www.tunemybass.com/ which, despite the name, has a variety of 6/7 string guitar tunings as well. Pretty nifty.

Tune the thickest (E) string to the same pitch as your third thickest (D) string.

If its getting really flabby and it doesn't make a tone, its possible that you have the wrong gauge of string on your thickest. Make sure you're not using a string that is designed for the A string.

If it sounds right when open, but sounds wrong when you're playing it on the 7th fret of the 6th string, its also possible that your guitar is not intonated properly. Look for tutorials on intonation.

Other than that, drop-D tuning is extremely easy. Just go down one whole step on the 6th string.

Guitars are such a hassle!

*turns on keyboard and starts playing*

joking of course

You have no idea how much I want to build an electric guitar/piano hybrid.

It wouldn't be that hard to do, I'd just have to get a piano with steel or nickel-wound strings, put pickups under them and wire them to an analouge output.

Do it. I'd love to see/hear that.

Dropped D is pretty easy to do, now (D-G-C-G-C-D) can **** off proper, been trying to get it to work so I can play the rain song but the strings get all flabby and fall out of tune quickly
