can someone tell me how to add mods to a .gcf file

What so that you can carry them over if you format?
If you want to install a mod normally you don't have to add it to your GCF. You have to go into:
c:\program Files\Valve\Steam-apps\"Your Username"\Counter-Strike Source\Cstrike\
Then you get all the folders in the .zip file that correspond to the folders in that directory (e.g. sound or models/materials) and juse extract the corresponding files in there.
Though I'm sure there's a readme in the .zip/rar that you could read as it'll probably explain it better.
