Video: YouTube - Left 4 Dead - EP1 - Underground (Infected Half Life 2)

If you are bored of the demo maps you can now play the City 17 part of Half-Life 2: Episode One in Left 4 Dead. All you need is the game and GCFScape. I could have spent a few hours getting a list of content used and made a download with the maps and all the other files, but I'm not sure if Valve would like that. I would be essentially giving out half of EP1 to everyone for free and I believe that could be labeled as piracy. So here are the instructions:

Do all of the below:
open /steam/steamapps/source materials.gcf
and extract the contents of /hl2/materials/ to
steam/steamapps/common/left 4 dead demo/hl2/materials

open /steam/steamapps/source models.gcf
and extract the contents /hl2/models/ to
steam/steamapps/common/left 4 dead demo/hl2/models

open /steam/steamapps/episode 1 shared.gcf
and extract the contents of /episodic/ to
steam/steamapps/common/left 4 dead demo/hl2/

open /steam/steamapps/half-life 2 episode one.gcf
and extract the contents of /episodic/maps to
steam/steamapps/common/left 4 dead demo/left4dead/maps

Notes:

  • Maps are on a timer, you will get an announcement before the map changes. If your whole team dies the timer will be reset.
  • In the hospital map you can fall down into water. If you fall go to an edge and press space till you reach the top and get onto the stairs.
  • You can see the sky at 2 doors, don't be alarmed, it's an Area Portal that is not opened correctly. Just go into it and it will be all fine.

Ravenholm:

I am aware that a lot of you would like to play Ravenholm in L4D and I am working on that. There are a few problems though:
  • The first map crashes on load (There's a model or a texture that is incompatible with L4D).
  • The map before the last is not really playable because L4D does not support swimming in water and you just fall to your dead when you jump into water.

Enjoy!

Nice, I've used a simular procedure to play some CSS maps I thought about HL2 & Co but I didn't realise you could play a map without a corresponding nav file.

I'd give your server a go but my ping is a bit too high.

how come that there are viewmodels for objects like gas canister?
how come that player models have animations for picking up e use them?

You can spawn those items with sv_cheats 1 on, in Left 4 Dead anyway. You can have the gas canister, oxygen and fuel tank. They all have custom hold animations as well as a first person view models. Since you use them so frequently as tactical objects I guess Valve decided to make it look better, especially considering other players can see you picking up items, it would look silly just floating there in front of you.

the red fuelcans explode like molotovs when shot, the white dumpy gas cylinders explode instantly when shot and the long green oxygen tank has a 3 second delay explosion after being shot, you only see a couple in the demo maps, but they are quite frequent in the full game.

The server has the nav files, the server spawns the zombies and as such you do not need the navs when you are a client of the server. Makes sense?
