How to spy

Yeah, the creator of this video is a god amongst men. I definitely learned a thing or two that helped me though. Learning the "b" quickly redisguises you was a godsend.

Great video, except:
-Text goes by way too fast
-Text is white, and bloom is on during the demonstration, making the text hard to see sometimes.

Other than that, brilliant video!

Wow, amazing video with great examples. The text does go away too fast though, I found myself having to pause quite a bit to actually absorb the text and situation. I guess I should learn to read faster, or it was just too fast.

TIP: Cloaked spies only carry the primary (#1) weapon. If you see someone with their melee out they are not a spy.

Well made video! Does anyone recognize the tune? I may try to get to the TF2 matchup on Saturday.

How do you put sappers on stuff? Do you just go up to it and touch it?

0_o This is a beginner's guide. There are many more advanced techniques (e.g. slash animation is faster than backstab and still down same damage if from behind). The best thing about this vid is the music. The worse thing is the players he's facing, seriously, noobs the lot of 'em.

[Edit] Advanced Techniques

Very good video, only thing it doesn't discuss is using classes for mobility. For example I usually go scout when I need to travel long distances and then re-disguise myself as something supportive (demoman, engineer) to do my thing. Yes, you may get spotted easily by doing this but imo it's usually worth the effort.

Also spy disguised as spy works when there's multiple spies in both teams, it sort of confuses other players and gives a natural explanation why that one guy is cloaking/decloaking at will and running at "wrong" directions etc.

Never disguise as medic. Medics always get heal request spammed and people have short tempers on that, especially if they see you just staring at them with the needlegun pointing at their groin.

I basically new most of it,he just does few of the things faster than me.
But I had no idea a stab from above is an insta-kill..going to own now heh :D

Scout doesn't increase your speed. Your max speed is set to the spy speed, which I think is the same as the majority of the classes.

Also, spy doesn't work because the enemy spy will always be disguised (have a mask on). So unless you can disguise as an enemy spy disguised as an enemy (your team) demoman, it is useless and you will get shot regardless because everyone is suspicious.

Scout is the fastest, the come Spy,Engineer,Pyro,Sniper & Medic then comes Demoman as he is a bit slower for some reason then Soldier and finally Fatty.

No. If you want to do that you need to disguise as a Scout on YOUR team to get to the front without anyone (including enemy spies) noticing. Then you switch to an enemy class.

Never disguise as an enemy Spy. If you ever see a friendly Spy with no mask on it is a SPY!

It's an exploit of stupidity. Admittedly doesn't always work but it has its uses :)

And enemy spies aren't _always_ disguised.

Yeah, i think i read stuff pretty fast but there was a lot of text and i missed most of it. A really good video though, i definitely learned some stuff from it.

I haven't played a spy much, but whenever I see one on my team head for the enemy lines disguised I try to help him out by firing at him (and missing) to make it look a bit more realistic.

This is a good idea that I hadn't thought of...

Not being much of a spy player I haven't messed around with disguising as a member of my own team before, but I can definitely see the advantages to it at times, in that if your defending a point looking like a heavy might intimidate the opposition into holding back for a few vital seconds, etc. I think one of the key things that is brought to light in the article Crispy referenced is that your role as a spy is to do as much intelligent damage as you can to the opposition to help your team win the match by tipping the balance, even if that means you get killed in the process. A lot of spy players seem to float around blind spots ganking players, which might do their scores wonders, but doesn't necessarily translate into a win for their team in the final analysis.

They almost always get checked by their teammates though.

As for what Kadayi said I was in a Dustbowl round just last night where I had been hitting the sentry nests all game but no advantage was taken and the Engies usually de-sapped them all very quickly. I kept doing it just to be annoying and just as my team made the push (which I'll admit I wasn't aware of at all) I stuck sappers on all the sentries literally as about 5 teamies ran across the yard to the flag because the Engies had all run to the CP to fix another SG or something. My teamies didn't know I was there and I didn't know they were there, but the timing was so great (and so lucky) it worked perfectly and the other team were left crying: "WTF????????" "How?"

Just goes to show you don't need to be a pro Spy to make a difference. Persistance and patience will get you a long way.

I disguise as a teammate until I cloak then change to an enemy. It lets you check ahead without the enemy realising you're a spy, before moving in and trying to get behind them, and when you hit b (for last disguise) you will disguise as the same class but now as an enemy.

I saw this video a few days ago and it's very good indeed. I play the Spy the most and I learnt something new! The Spy check with 'bumping' into team mates. You'll travel through team mates but bump into spies. I've killed 3 enemy spies using this technique, tis awesomomome..

ya, it's helped me since Day 1. Always a great way to notice they are enemies. They usually yell at me when I kill them to..."HOW DID YOU KNOW?!?!"

Makes me laugh.

Oh shoot. That video gave away all my best tips to the mass. Now everybody is going to know. :(

I hate it that when I'm hiding somewhere charging my cloak or just waiting for something, some team mate comes with guys chasing him, sits near me and get both of us killed.

I hate it when engineers start building dispensers around you so even if you're disguised, they still see the beam interloping up into your cranium.

Woah, that sounded intelligent.

They'll shoot you anyway for being on the opposite team. That's what the cloak is for.

I play spy all the time. Its great fun, really funny to stab heavies in the back, and I know how annoying it is for engies to keep having to whack their turrets to kill sappers :)

Didn't know about the 'b' thing though, and I also never figured out the turret direction trick - I'll give that a go.

wow- When I played spy, I mean, I once actually got behind enemy lines and stabbed a sniper without cloaking, -backpedaling, making it look like I was running away- But this guy can stab a whole lot of people afore anyone even realises it. I hope everyone in this thread doesn't play spy on saturday.
^-^

But disguising as a scout doesn't give you a scout's speed. You still travel at the spy speed. Disguising as an HW guy would give you his speed because he is slower.

Heavy will rip your organs out if you call him fatty once more!
