How true to the original are the critters? (unmarked spoilers guaranteed)

I was just wondering what people thought of the D3 beasties. The generic melee zombies are fine by me and the uniformed gunmen (or gunundead) are highly reminiscent of the grunts and sergeants from the older games.
I’m ambivalent about the revamped imps, but at least they still toss fireballs around. I’d like to see someone model a brown, semi-scaly rough skinned spiky replacement mind.
Lost Souls need to be more skull-like in my opinion. Look far to alien, not enough like a demonic apparition.
Sounds odd, but despite whining about the imps’ new appearance the Hell Knight is definitely memorable; and the new demon is… interesting, although not that recognisable. I always thought Pinky looked daft and out of place, however.
Those two headed, gory backed monsters (someone better tell me their actual name) feel purely ornamental- there’s nothing they can do that imps can’t do better.

Not entirely monster relevant, but the power of the flashlight bash is surprising, especially considering how weak and puny the animation makes it feel. Pistol is left frustratingly lacking- it’s more cost efficient to whack enemies around. This isn’t easy when they’re in large groups- I find myself repeatedly annoyed to hell (urrgh, now there’s a bad pun) when my screen goes wobbling around madly as I’m pummelled by the forces of darkness. Perhaps I’m just too pampered by the “old school” non-reactive screens of the first Dooms…

In the original games there was no real difference between enemies except for appearance, damage, health and speed; hell, same goes for most games. At least here there's a bit more variation in behaviour and abilites (leaping imps, woo); it's just that now its incredibly hard to compare new monsters to their ancestors.

Behold, for now I wear the human pants. Ahem.

Have you even been to the Hell portions yet? :P Very scaley, brown and burnt imps all over of the place in there (as well as the Hell Knights). I found the imps to be severly underused in the game -- I would have loved to see them jumping from wall to wall outside of a cutscene or scripted sequence. They weren't very fast either, which I thought was one of their main characteristics. They just walked at you throwing fireballs, and they hardly pounced at you as well.

Also, those ones that turn invisible posed zero threat. They just appeared in front of you, asking for a shotgun blast. One shot and they're dead; what's the point?[/QUOTE]

Barbequed imps yes, but spiky man-sized imps no. Hmm. Suppose you could take a Hell imp and stick a few forks into it?

Are you kidding me? They were easily the most overused monster in the game and everytime i saw one I got the feeling "oh, another one of these". They were so predictable and retarded. I definitely preferred the original doom imps as they were actually scary "looking".

I really wish the Hell Knights had horns and hooves like in the original game, not to say the Hell Knights in Doom 3 wern't scary. I definitely liked the revenants, cacodemons, and the pinky demon. All in all way too many imps and not enough of everything else.

Thomas, I just realized that I have the same pic in your avatar framed and above my bed.

You are now on my "I like you" list :)

ok, underused is a bad word choice...unimaginative is better. :P They just sort of appeared and walked towards you throwing fireballs, which just bores you after a while; especailly since one or two shotgun shells will take them down. If they were less used in the game, and ran up walls and ceilings etc., they ould have been a more interesting monster.

Maggots! That's the name. Horribly stupid useless things, as are Wraiths (teleporting scythe-armed imps? Bring the Spectres back dammit!)

Oh yeah, Cacodemons = WIN. Would've been better being red, blue, and scaly without the exposed brain and flappy "hand" of skin on their undersides mind...

(WTF was with the cherubs, anyway? And the bosses... the tank-dude reminded me too much of the Gutsdozer off one of NES Megaman games for me to take it seriously...)

Cherubs were one of the better monsters. It was very chilling to hear the cries of a baby from something you are shooting.

*SPOILER WARNING*
Wait a sec, this is a remake of a really old game... how could this be a spoiler... well anyway

I was kinda confused at the end. I mean, the game never really tells you what the hell (oh I am sooo phunny) that final boss creature is. Unless of course I missed something... But I mean, I was like, "O.K. here's another big demon boss thingeh." A few Soul Cube rapings later, it dies, and the Soul Cube flys off into the lava. Badda bing badda boom, hell is gone? WTF? I would really like a better explanation of what exacly happened there at the end.

But talking about monsters, the HellKight was freaking awsome, in a scared shitless way. It didn't run at you or try and sneak up at you. It was freakin scary because of how big, and hard to take down it was (unless you're using the BFG9000).

I'd say the hardest boss fight was the one with the "gardian" to rescue the Soul Cube. Moslty because I didn't know what the hell (o there i go again lol) to do. The final boss was very easy. Just use sprint so he can't catch up with you, run circles around the arena, killing peon baddies until the Soul Cube is charged, then launch the Soul Cube repetedly at him, until he dies. It's funny how the Soul Cube is more effective, the lower your health is, since it attacks untill your health is at 100.

Sorry for getting a bit off topic.

It was the Cyberdemon. The SoulCube closed up the portal to hell. You saw it cool the lava.
