Okay, i've got this homework assignment.

"How would you prove..."

1) That the earth is round
2) That the earth orbits the sun
3) That the moon orbits the earth

Rule: You have no spaceship, no satellite, and you cannot fly. From a human perspective only.

Explain how.

EDIT: Oops my bad didn't know this was in the gaming forum.

1) because at the solstice sunlight shines straight down a well located somewhere on the earth, while a few miles away another well has a shadow cast in it shadow. Indicating a curve. Also, when a ship sails away from you on the ocean you see it begin to disappear from the bottom up.

2) by tracking the movements of other planets, we have discovered the only way to explain there movements logically would be if we were revolving also. Because planets like mars will go forward, then backwards, then go forward again.

3) ..well if we are moving, and the moon is never farther than a set distance away from us, it must be following us. And we can clearly see it moving across the sky...

you should take astronomy

If you put a ruler up against the horizon , you can see the horizon is curved.

THE EARTH IS ROUND?!

Yeah, I'd fail that assignment, I couldn't explain that stuff in an inteligent way :(

For proving the earth is round I always like the explanation of how ships coming into port seem to rise out the sea and ones leaving appear to sink. Nice, simple, and visual.

1) That the earth is round
Swim around to world! Otherwise the fact of an horizon. It the Earth was flat there would be none.

2) That the earth orbits the sun
Astrolobe?

3) That the moon orbits the earth
Interlobe?

Simple, the Stars and Constellations

1) Go to the North and South, and find out if the constellations are identical (Assuming that the "world is round" is a theory already)

2) You can only see stars at night, that would mean, during the four seasons, several stars don't appear on along the equator, because they are on the opposite side of the sun

3) The Lunar periods, well I pretty sure you know the answer to that one anyway (Anyone would)

actually seasons occur, not because of the earths rotation around the sun, but because the earth is tilted twenty three point some degrees (y)

Because it's tilted AND it rotates about the sun.

That the moon goes up and down? That then also proves that the sun orbits the Earth.

The earth doesn't necessarily rotate about the sun or the moon about the earth because it's all arbitrarily relative. If you want, you can pick the earth as being a stationary reference and show that the moon and the earth revolve around us. It means that the other planets would have these wierd spirograph like orbits. But there's no law saying that you can't reference everything from the earth.

As for proving it's round. well, you could call up your buddy in China and ask them where about the sun is, most likely it's nightime if you call them during the day in America. This proves that it's round.

nope only because it is tilted, because in winter the sun is closest to the earth. Because when you have a tilted object the angle at which light strikes it is more or less concentrated depending on how you tilt it. Take a flash light and shine it directly down on your bed, then shine the light at the same spot but move the flashlight lower to your bed. The light is closer but it's less concentrated.

See, electives teach you stuff also.

edit: ...unless that is what you were talking about. because i took it as you talking about distances.

yeah, but if we weren't goin in circles it would be permawinter/summer

1) That the earth is round

Walk in a straight line until you come back to the same point.

2) That the earth orbits the sun

Make a frictionless pendulum and watch it rotate as the days and year passes.

3) That the moon orbits the earth

Observe lunar cycles in comparision to the sun and a single point on earth.

Yeah, but if the earth didn't rotate around the sun then it would stay one season year-round...

Taking electives doesn't make you any smarter if you can't apply the logic.

...wow did nobody see my edit? I wrote that because he might have been talking about how the earth gets closer and farther away from the sun as it revolves around it, which is what most people believe causes a change in seasons.

Don't worry about it. I understand you. It went over their heads.
