Just out of curiosity, if hollywood ends up making a half life film, how would you guys want the style of the film to be?

I was thinking that it would be cool to see it through like a documentary kind of footage, Kinda like Children of men? Anyways, thats just my thought.

From the rebel's perspective, it'd be shot like Children of Men. :D

In post-production I would like all the footage to be destroyed and the film cancelled.

I would like it to be made in a way that as soon as they start writing the script everything explodes and kills anyone who thinks a Half Life movie would be at all good.

Come one, if there's a movie made and you like it, well, you like it; but if you don't, it doesn't affect the game's awsomeness.

Realistic to the extent that you actually create a war and film it.

I would love to see a drama about Half-Life 2, development, E3, beta leak and final release...
Robin Williams should play Gabe Newell.

Down and gritty with the action, make it a quest of pure, intense survival. Dont flood it with CGI.

Children of Men is a good baseline for our imaginations to work from, at least for some of the chapters in HL2.

Dont flood it with CGI.
So you are thinking puppets or models for the Vortigaunts, Headcrabs, Nihilith, etc? Or just keep the CGI to the minimum?

I think not making one, would be for the best. I don't think it will transfer well into a film in all honesty. Valve said they've been approached with some appalling scripts, but then it's never going to be anything but a game-movie port. Sure they could make a quick few bucks from it, but I get the impression they'd rather hold onto their artistic pride and highly established quality.

Also, it's great to be talking about this 'film' for the 4000th time, a thread every 2 weeks is just so exciting!

Actually thats a good idea. F*ck a movie adaptation, create a DocuDrama about the games creation :D

Edward Norton should play Doug Lombardi

If I think about it, us Brits would get awesome 'Orange Wednesday' Promos ;)

"The Protaganist would be wearing an orange suit, and the events take place on a wednesday"
"THAT IS EXCELLENT, GO AHEAD AND MAKE THAT FILM WITH OUR MONEY!"

But that is Half Life 2, we are discussing Half Life 1, totally different moods and atmosphere

I still say like Transformers even if this is only Michael Bay's twin Nathan. I think Transformers is the best film since last summer, lots of slow motion.

Well, the story of Half-life 1 was so appallingly bad and cliched that it would never transfer well to the big screen.

Half-life 1 excelled at story-telling, not in story content. To emulate half-life 1's style of storytelling on the screen would be impossible, because it requires there to be a player as an active participant in the story.

Half-life 2's story is slightly better than half-life 1's, but still fairly cliched. Again the key point in half-life 2 is story-telling, not story content.

I say, if a movie was ever made, the only way they could go about it without it being a miserable failure would be to remove Gordon Freeman to the realms of legend and allusion, and focus on the perspective of a single rebel. In style, it could be shot very similarly to Children of Men, and its story would be one of oppression, then rebellion, then survival.

That said, it would not be a very interesting movie, because it has been done so many times before.

they should make it instead of being in black mesa freeman is in iraq and the aliens teleportations where the secret weapons saddam was hiding

and gordon must be a ninja, that decided to abandon the lifestyle of assasin in the feudal japan and went into science

Half-Life 2 might be translateable to film, but I don't see any way of making HL1 acceptable as a piece of cinema.

heck no!!!
it will be ruined!!
do you see how may games are ruined from being made into film?

silent hill was total crap....

Dear god, do not compare me to michael bay. ;(

Heres how it should be. A trilogy, Half life 2 mixes with the first half life making it into a 3 hour film like king kong. Then, make episode 1 and episode two together. Thats another film. And last but not least, The end episode which i hope valve makes, The search for the borealis.

Take the "children of men" long camera shots to keep a documentary style and keep CGI to a minimum( meaning only for the those fast zombies, head crabs, Combine dropships, Ect.)
No CGI for buildings.

The only problem i think for the movie is that i dont want to hear gordon freeman talking. I like to use my imagination for that. :)

I'm having difficulty contemplating HL1 and 2 as a single 3 hour movie. The point of HL1 was to accept the Gmans job. The fact that nobody knew what would happen there after meant that fan's imaginations started to spark into life. Holding on to that imagination means they are eager to watch the second film.

The problem with both games is that you are a singular person; Gordon Freeman. The story was only spoonfed to the player in a linear fasion. That makes it extremely difficult for subplots and the overall plot to blend and mix.

Doing a movie adaptation of one of the existing stories wouldn't work. It is entirely possible to make a good movie set in the Half-life universe, though. Personally, I'd love to see a movie set during the portal storms, before the 7-hour war.

transformers sucked.

hl1 has wayyyy too many good things to fit into just 1 movie.

but if they did make the movie they would have to include:
1. a scene where someone turns to gibs
2. headcrab zombie transformation
3. gordon not saying a word, only using his facial expressions to tell what he is thinking/feeling
4. no first person
5. otis
6. no adrian
7. very little use of music, unless its actually in the story, being played by a radio or something. none of kelly bailey's techno ... it takes away from the survival/horror thing

i would prefer that they included barney's and gordon's story, where barney's side has most of the dialogue and while gordon is for the most part alone so he has no reason to say anything. it should then end when gordon is being dragged to the trash compactor.
