It's not every day that a modification lets us see something a bit more concrete and solid than just model renders or map screenshots. Today, modification Hull-Breach, already considered a flagship in terms of quality despite being somewhat far from release, shows us their implementation of one of the cool features that'll be in Hull-Breach: heat vision.[br]

[br]The screenshot above doesn't look like that much, but seeing it in action is much better; so download the video at either the US Mirror or the EU Mirror, It's a small, relatively insignificant feature, but Hull-Breach's demonstration of it shows that they're on top of things - and the rest of what's present in the video looks good too, although according to the website "the HUD is a place holder and not the real article."

To browse the rest of their development blogs and media, head over to the Hull-Breach website.

Pretty cool... Would be neat if the heat didn't vanish instantly after death, but I'm sure they're working on it.

Not impressive at all. I have DOS games that can pull that off. :)

Oooh, real heat vision! Very impressive I must say, I wonder how they did it.

Agreed 100%

It is a pretty cool effect tho.

The development blog on the site says that the next thing to work on; fading heat after death.

You know, the websites says very little about the mod. I couldn't even find if it was single player or multiplayer.

Nice on the fading heat. That would make it perfect.

Hull Breach is a multiplayer (only) mod for Source. It's a tactical shooter with two opposing teams composed of three different classes: for the Senallin there's the Infiltrator (scout), Marine (trooper) and Havoktroppen (heavy). The player classes of the Alliance soldiers, collectively known as astromachs, have not yet been announced, but are likely to be very similar counterparts to those of the Senallin.

I think I'm right in saying the game will have a rounds system like Counter-Strike, and once players die they will be able to control a recon bot to view the rest of the game. It has not been said whether the recon bots will still play an active part in the rest of the round. The team have said it will take about three shots to take a player down and also have announced combat in areas of varying gravity.

Oh, not that hard; some basic shaders. The only thing different here is the barrel heat that's slowly fading, and that I'm pretty much sure is just a set of textures/maps they made for that effect, and they just switch textures with a timer. Neat effect though, it's what bothered me most about dystopia's heat vision. If they have a large arsenal it means a lot more work though, since you have to make a separate set of heat textures/maps for each and every weapon.

There are simpler ways to do it without resorting to texture replacement.

The current site is just a site in between sites, they are finishing the work on their new site which will be up soon along with a tasty media release and a much more informative site.

And like Crispy said the round system will be very different from map to map or rather the playtheme of the map. There are the hull-breach maps where one team is hijacking an enemy ship and boards that ship and the other team defends the systems and control over the ship.

This would be similar to the rounds of Counter-strike. Only difference being that the killed players will take control over a recon bot, which will be able to send a video feed to their living teammates' huds. There have been discussions about giving the recons added activeness, like being able to hack doors, security etc to aid their teammates.
The reconbots will be destroyable. I don't know if you respawn as a new one though, that parts uncertain.

Then there are the planetside missions which from what I gather will have a similar spawnsystem as Battlefield etc. with reinforcements but with a limited amount of spawns available for the team.

Take note that all this should be taken with a grain of salt as none of it is set in stone yet.

*Edit* Oh and btw, excellent effect, props team Hull-breach. Once the heat fades of the corpses it should be excellent. Of course to be honest the heat should be noticable in fading as the cooling of a human body takes hours. So you would have to stand a good solid half hour to just see some change in heat level.

The heat effect on the barrel of the gun? What ways? Surely it must be mapped, and needs a map per "frame" ? Even with shaders or the likes you'd need a map of some sort.

Gun wouldn't fade nearly that fast either, but it looks cool and feels right; so I assume the bodies will fade noticeably.

was there auto lock in that?

would be cool if most of the guns had that :D :D :D

I mean it is the future
