After seeing many other peoples' screenshots of Half-Life 2 (and its episodes) I am starting to really doubt that my graphics card is any good at all (and its Radeon 9250 updated to the fullest update). I need your guys' help. Please tell me whether my graphics are terrible or passable. Yes, I have DirectX 9. :upstare:

Also, here are some things that really bothered me:

Wonderful water surface graphics:

What the hell are these...tiles?:

Good Lord I don't think I want to see this anymore:

Based on the missing textures, I'd say you are using a non-Steam version of HL2 (aka pirated copy).

Also, you are probably using an integrated graphics card, which isn't good enough to run HL2 at decent settings.

I bought all my Half-Life games from the main Steam webpage.

Are you saying Radeon 9250 cannot handle the graphics?

Wasn't there a prophecy... That someone would ask if they could run Half Life 2 on their Commodore 64?

What if Fidchell is that man?

What if the time of the prophecy is now?

What if YOUR GRAPHICS CARD IS VERY POOR GET A NEW ONE.

Why exactly are you acting like such a smartass? All I wanted to know was one simple thing.

1. To fix missing textures, verify the integrity of your game through Steam.

2. To fix crappy graphics, get a new card. Yours is outdated now, especially with all the HL2 updates in the years after release.

Thanks for your help. Could you recommend me any good cards that will greatly improve the graphics?

The Radeon 9250 is a AGP card. While some more modern cards are AGP most of the good ones have moved over to PCI-Express. You can do a short-term graphics-card-only upgrade or you can move up to longer-term PCI-Express. Which means a new motherboard. Which probably means new CPU and RAM. And could also mean new Power Supply.

You might have directx 9 installed but your card only supports up to directx 8.1 features.

Your screens are also full of errors. You might want to check for problems. I used to have a Radeon 9200 and HL2 looked better than that.

As for a new graphics card, we can't recommend anything without your system specs and there are the problems that Operational posted.

I would recommend purchasing a new computer. But first we need your system specs. While I'm outraged at the responses you've been getting, you should have posted your hardware first.

Where is that first screenshot taken? I dont remember water near the bridge.

It's inside the train car in the beginning.

Radeon sucks. get Gforce. :D

qft (quote for truth)

GeForce IS much better (in my book) for valve games. Also, Valve makes alot of their games specifically for GeForce.

My dad just got a whole new computer (749$) and it has 2 GB RAM, GeForce 8400 which I am hopeing to upgrade soon. I still havent yet to be able to play any recent games abouve 800x600 Resolution. Which is still playable. And you will get [on 800x600] between 35-60 fps, depending on what you're looking at) and a good powersupply.

Hey!
I thought Valve makes their games specifically for ATi :-)
If you hadn't notice the game box has ATi and AMD logos :-)
About crappy looks...Get the licensed Steam version (however that would require a GOOD connection to the Internet),upgrade it (~0.3 Gb for the English sounds,40 Mb for Steam update...the rest should be on the HL2 DVD) and play. The graphics won't disappoint you.All ATi Radeon cards have really good shaders.

@Fidchell - post your full system specs. If your CPU is good enough (which I kind of doubt) it might be worth shelling out for a much better AGP card like a Radeon x1950 Pro, Radeon HD3850, or an Nvidia Geforce 7950GT. If so, you'd probably need a new Power Supply Unit as well, and probably a bit more RAM. If not, you're probably best off getting a whole new system (or keeping an eye out for any kind of AGP card you can get for cheap, like a Radeon X850 or something).

@everyone else - I'm not seeing any missing textures or errors. I think that's just the way his card his shittifying things, no reason to suspect it's not legit.

That's why they say it works best on ATI on the option menus in game, and they focus on building their games for ATI cards.

oh yeah.... I am fail... I'm sorry :(

I remeber those now... in going to go into a corner and hide for a while.....

Thanks, guys. I'm getting a new computer soon, so I'll try looking for one with the GeForce graphics card.

*Moved to help section.

Unfortunately your hardware is limiting you significantly. If you need help asking how good new computers are you are considering buying then feel free to post them here for us to look at. I'd recommend a Nvidia GeForce 8800GT 512mb graphics card in your new computer which is a great balance of cost / power / size etc. You'll be able to play all Valve's games on highest settings with that card. It's a shame it wouldn't work in your current PC though.

in source games, missing texture show up as purple checkerboards.

So do missing shaders, and you can get a purple checkerboard in CSS by alt-tabbing out at the right time during loading. Does that mean I have an illegal CSS?

its true, its just a bug in the source engine. sometimes it happens if your tabbed out for to long.

Restarting the game always fixes it with moi.

lol im still baffled by the thread title. it doesnt make sense.
