I don't seem to be able to set the refresh rate.

Hi there. I'm trying to make HL 2 (orange box version) refresh at 85hz. The articles I've read on the net say to either add -refresh 85 on the command line of the HL 2 icon, or in the Set Launch Options in the properties for the game in Steam. The problem is neither seem to work. I can't be sure but it looks like 60hz to me because of the terrible tearing and also rippling in the graphics.

What am I doing wrong?

I have an Nvidia 7800GTX graphics card, and I used to use a cool program called coolbits that added a section in the card's control panel to override refresh rates to whatever I wanted. But it doesn't seem to work with Nvidia's new drivers. Would someone be able to suggest an alternative (Win XP)?

If no one can help can you at least tell me if your game refreshes higher than 60hz (if you don't play with wait for vertical sync on)? I would play with vertical sync on but it slows my frame rate down too much. Surely there's a solution for this.

your refresh rate is based one what your monitors refresh rate is. like mine i have a lcd 19" widescreen and it has a refresh rate of 60 and 75 hz. you cant go higher then you maximum. an easier way of changing your refresh is to go to your advanced video settings in properties(which i assume you already know where that is) click the monitor tab and change your refresh rate.make sure 'hide modes that this monitor cant display' is checked.

Thanks for your reply, but my problem is getting the game to refresh at anything higher than 60hz. My desktop refresh rate is set to 85hz. When I start the game it's clearly refreshing at 60. That's the problem. How do I get it to refresh at 85, because turning Wait for Vertical Sycn on slows my framerate down too much.
