I feel royally screwed - CD Key doesn't even work

Here's my problem.. I bought the game a few months ago but didn't have time to play it due to college. So I finally popped it into my computer this christmas break, excited to play it.. Everything installs fine..

So anyway, I have to punch in my CD Key. It's on the back of one of the disc holders. So I do that, and it does not work. It tells me that it's an Invalid Key Code. I try it several different ways in case the Zeroes were actually O's. So nothing works, and well you get the picture.

So I register to Steam and their forums, etc. I try to contact them but I can't even do that. Their website is frustrating as hell to use. How can I receive support if I can't even ask for it? I feel like I really got screwed on a 60 dollar game.

So I decided to come here to ask a player base for advice. Man I really hope you guys have advice for me. I would deeply appreciate it.

And have you also tried to see if the 1 wasn't an L or a 7 or something?

I bought it from Wal Mart several months ago but finally took it out of the box today for the first time.

Even though I typed it exactly as it appears it replies in anger "CD Key Invalid".

So L's can be mixed up as 7's? I didn't know that.

Poor luck certainly does stink. I'll try to contact support, if you guys have anymore advice to give I would appreciate it.

Were you typing in the last bit of numbers at the end that did not have a "-" before it? I had that problem for like 5min, lol. It turns out it was not even part of the serial number.

No matter how much money offered that's something I could never force myself to do...Buy HL2 and play several months down the road.
Then again all men are not created equal when you have HL2 sucker like me.

I mean he didnt even take it out of the box let alone install it and maybe playing the first chapter or maybe just set up the graphics or maybe setup graphics and update it or maybe take a peek at Freeman's crosshair. I mean, I, u know, I mean, cuz, well, ah, oh, ok, damn he is good.
