Sorta hard to put words to. It puts more greatfulness in myself to be alive. Great soundtrack, too.

Apocalypse Now is still my favorite movie. But both movies do justice, although Apocalypse Now ventures more into the psychological trauma of war.

The first half of Full Metal Jacket is funnier than most comedies. And no, I'm not one of the nazis who insists that the second half sucked, the second half was just as good, just in a different manner.

FMJ=my second favorite war movie other than Apocalypse Now.

I saw... parts of it. My friend was showign it to me and kept skipping to the "good" parts. I was all... "but I wanna watch the whole thing :("

Great, great movie. And yeah, there are people who say the first half was good and the second half was terrible. And yeah, they're very stupid. In my opinion it's one of Kubrick's best and one of the best war movies ever made.

I love the one liners from the drill seargent. Great movie all in all though.

Yeah, the second half was just more memorable to me. Animal Mother was a ****ing awesome character.

Plus it had "She love you long time Joe!"

Love the movie, wish I had it on DvD or at least video :(

exactly the same thing happened to me, i'll probably rent it now that you guys have reminded me about it..

Kubrick is my favourite director and Full Metal Jacket was the 4th film of his which I saw. (After 2001, Dr Strangelove & The Shining) The film retains the subtle humour that is present in every one of Kubrick's films and continues his message to humanity about mental conditioning. In fact, one could argue that this film, more than any of Kubrick's others, is the perfect Kubrick film, displaying all of his ideas and many nuances.

So yeah, good film. I recommend you see Paths of Glory now.

It's a great movie, but not Kubrick's best imo. A Clockwork Orange and The Shining are better.

No one's disputing that :D

Still, when it comes to 'nam I prefer Platoon over all else.

I can't decide which I prefer; Full Metal Jacket or Platoon. Platoon is more action based, but I prefer the chracters in Full Metal Jacket, and thats saying something as Platoon had some great characters. Full Metal Jacket has some great quotes though, like the helicopter gunner and anything that Animal Mother says.

awesome, the fight between the platoon and the female sniper in the destroyed town was really memorable, the music and atmosphere of those scenes were incredible, very erie...

Amen. Animal Mother going apeshit with the machine gun is an image I will never forget.

Difficult choice between whats best out of:
Full metal jacket, Platoon, Apocalypse Now and the Deer Hunter.
All very different in their own way.

Apocalypse Now FTW. The Vietcong raid scene is one of my very all time favorite movie scenes.

There were so many great lines in that film.

"Anyone who runs is a VC. Anyone who stands still is a well-disciplined VC."

And of course everything that the drill sergeant said was pure gold. The actor was great, mainly because he actually was a drill sergeant.

"Who said that? Who the **** said that? Who's the slimy little communist shit, twinkle-toed cocksucker down here who just signed his own death warrant? Nobody, huh? The fairy ****ing godmother said it. Out-****ing-standing. I will PT you all until you ****ing die. I'll PT you until your assholes are sucking buttermilk."

Ah yes, FMJ is my favourite movie ever. Great humour, fantastic characters, many memorable scenes. Superb movie.

i have a poster for FMJ in my room - says in Vietnam the wind doesnt blow
it sucks

The problem with FMJ for me is that, knowing it was filmed in the UK, it now looks like it was filmed in the UK. Look at the boot camp - UK road markings. The platoon pushing through the destroyed cityscape - London Docklands with a few palm trees hastily dropped in.

That's the point. You don't need to care where it is.

I rewatched the movie yesterday. It has some great lines.

HARTMAN: How tall are you, Private?
COWBOY: Sir, five foot nine, sir!
HARTMAN: Five foot nine? I didn't know they stacked shit that high! You trying to squeeze an inch in on me somewhere, huh?
COWBOY: Sir, no, sir.
HARTMAN: Bullshit! It looks to me like the best part of you ran down the crack of your mama's ass and ended up as a brown stain on the mattress! I think you've been cheated!
HARTMAN: Where in hell are you from anyway, Private?
COWBOY: Sir, Texas, sir!
HARTMAN: Holy dogshit! Texas! Only steers and queers come from Texas, Private Cowboy! And you don't look much like a steer to me, so that kinda narrows it down! Do you suck dicks?
COWBOY: Sir, no, sir!
HARTMAN: Are you a peter-puffer?
COWBOY: Sir, no,sir!
HARTMAN:I'll bet you're the kind of guy that would **** a person in the ass and not even have the goddam common courtesy to give him a reach-around! I'll be watching you!

Much, if not all, of R. Lee Ermey's dialogue during the Parris Island sequence was improvised. While filming the opening scene, where he disciplines Pvt. Cowboy, he says Cowboy is the type of guy who would have sex with another guy "and not even have the goddamned common courtesy to give him a reach-around". Stanley Kubrick immediately yelled cut and went over to Ermey' and asked, "What the hell is a reach-around?" Ermay politely explained what it meant. Kubrick laughed and re-shot the scene, telling Ermey to keep the line.

What is a reach-around, anyway?

It's not in any dictionary, online or real, and it's not on wikipedia.

I practically worship Kubrick. He took so long to do movies but they are for the most part flawless. I see that a lot of movies these days that have mistakes in casting, rushed production, heavy use of cgi, flawed scripts and just generally bad acting and directing all to make a quick buck for the studios. No one seems to be pushing the boundaries enough anymore.

Yes there are good films and directors around today but...Kubrick just made some films that are essentially undisputed classics. Even now they have hardly dated - 2001 has some better effects that some CGI effects I have seen in some recent films. The guy was a perfectionist and he took a long time to make these movies and it's paid off.

Yeah. Wish he was still around. :(

I'm glad I didn't know that first time watching. Afterwards when my dad told me it was filmed in the Uk I was totally shocked.
