$10 and 2 hours of work later, and it seems to be running without a hitch. No I didn't use the towel trick and no, I didn't buy one of those cheap repairs kits. All it took was some screws, washers, and some holes drilled in the right places. Here it is, happily naked:

Yes I realize it's on the bare carpet. I also understand the properties of static electricity. :p

So what exactly did you do? Just take off the cover?

Did you read what I wrote? Unfortunately it's not that simple. I just haven't put the cover back on it yet because I was testing it.

you didn't really explain what you did, can you like circle in orange or green what you changed.

I did read what you wrote. And I'll ask again, what exactly did you do aside from taking the cover off?

Oh, sorry, I was a little excited. I replaced the cheap X clamps the held the two heatsinks against the CPU and GPU with screws, and also switched out the thermal paste for something better. This allows for a solid contact between the processors and heatsinks, making for much better heat transfer.

Very cool. Was it running at all before that and would crap out after a certain time or was it red ringing as soon as you turned it on?

Insta-red ring. It was freezing quite often leading up to it the first time though.

Odd, I would think if it was a overheating issue it would atleast run for a short while. But good to know, I got a 360 so I'm sure it will happen eventually (eventhough I never actually play it).

I tried those exact steps on my old one, and it was still toast.

You just did the basic x-clamp fix right? I do them around town for like $30 bucks each. Never had an unrepairable box (except for a RROD E74 error, but that's a different issue than the basic RROD overheating bit). It's a good way to get some extra cash cause it's cheap and easy to do.

Yeah, seems like it. I was debating the possibility of buying up some RRoD'd 360s from ebay and turning them around for a profit.

You should. They'll definitely sell.

Next step (when you have some free time): Soft-modding.:naughty:
