I give up! Re: redownloading

Hi! After finally fixing (or so i think, i've only managed to play around 2 minutes of the bloody game, so i don't know) the IDdirect:: 9() or whatever problem, now whenever i play for more then 30 seconds i get a perfect blank blue screen and i have to turn of and on my computer again.

So im going to use acronis to take my computer back before i started to twiddle with the systems and start again. This will be before i purchased half-life episode one at all, so my question is, will i be able to download it again, considering i have paid for it, and i already had steam and half-life installed?

If it was a blue screen with a message (ie. a standard BSOD), and it happened in the same circumstances, I would immediately suspect an overheating problem.

I have never seen just a blank blue screen before. However there's a chance that it's still an overheat. Look into cleaning dust out of your heatsink fan and graphics card cooler, or looking for utilities which can increase the fan speed of your hardware. What are your specs anyhow?

And yeah, you can download it as many times as you like.

I've actually has the blank blue screen of death plenty of times with Source Games, really annoying when you can't identify the problem.
You know you can play the game in Direct X 8 mode, you'll lose some shader effects and HDR, but the game should work.

im not sure what it is. im just going along and then all of a sudden, with no warning, the game freezes and stays on for around 2 seconds, and then i get a blue screen. occasionally theres a buzzing noise. there is nothing on the blue screen. its just a blue screen.

I dont think its a heating problem, its too localised, and to coincidental.

as i've put on other posts, i have portal, so why is this a problem?

Ha! I didn't even contemplate trying the game with those ON.

when i try this, the game point blank refuses to launch.

half-life 2 and portal, which i haven't changed, work fine.

but not this.

Could you please post the specs of your system? Blue screens usually point to overheating. Do you play any other games? If so, which? On what kind of settings?
