Ok I always try to find the answer in forums by searching before I ask but I have been researching this one for months and I just can't find an answer. I need some help. HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU SPECTATE IN HALFLIFE2? lol

Seems like a simple thing to ask for since every game I have ever played can do it. Since I cannot find where anyone else is talking about this, I'm beginning to suspect there's something I don't understand. Whenever I go to the "spectate" tab in the in-game browser, there are no servers listed. If I approach it from outside the game and click on the "servers" tab in steam I can click on the "spectate" tab and I actually get a list of HLTV servers. But when I try to connect, nothing happens. It just sends me back to another Steam page.

I never see anyone spectating either. This is one of the main ways I have learned to play games in the past. By watching the good players play. And lord knows I need some help with HL. So any help on this spectating issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Spectate Half-Life 2 SP?

wtf are you talking about?????? if by spectating you mean noclip then just typ e sv_cheats 1 in console then noclip.

He's talking about the spectate option generally, the one very few people use these days. I'm not sure if it actually works due to lack of use. I'm sure it should, but i can't say i use it. Have you tried a variety of servers, using different filters?

Example of spectate list:

I'm not sure I understand half of these responses but yes I was referring to deathmatch. Sorry for leaving that out.

I'm somewhat surprised about this. If you go play any other ffa game on the market, spectating is a common occurance. It's also the a good way to see whether someone is cheating or whether they are just extremely skillful.

the title of this thread caught the corner of my eye and i thought i saw the word "lactate"... i just wanted you to know the kind of person i am is all.... *ahem*

I'm talking about the "spectate" tab in Steam. How well do you know this game? I would have at least looked before I responded.:D

in his defense, you left out a big piece of infomation, cuz hl2 and hl2dm are really different, since its NOT possible to spectate in HL2 cuz its a single player game, the only other thing u could of ment is noclip which moves just like spectating, u get to free look anywhere u want in the levels loaded. So next time be sure to include the "useful" pieces of info before u hit submit, that way this wont happen.

You mean watch HLTV games?

Yea, Spectate tab should do the trick. Or when you join a server in CS you can click on "spectate" =p

Spectating in a single playing game? Never heard of it. Again, there must be something I'm just missing in HL. In any other game, everyone would have known that I was talking about multiplayer. Especially since I mentioned the "Spectate" tab and the listing of servers. Do they actually have single player servers you can connect to? Hmmmm, me thinks the "useful" information is there, it just needs to be read.

Well I don't know if thats what I mean Pauly. If HLTV is the only way to spectate a DM "Multiplayer" game then yes that's what I mean. But when I go to that tab and try to connect, NOTHING HAPPENS. Any ideas?

Also, I'm not interested in CS. Just wanting to spectate HL DM.

Hey, everyone, lay off poor Fliption! Can't you all see he's a newbie around here? Maybe it's his first forum, you never know.

Have some consideration, next time.

I'm a newbie to the forum but not a newbie to gaming or forums in general. This forum experience is unlike any I have had before though. This must be a forum for little kids :). Is there a forum for adults to exchange useful information?

In all seriousness, I suspect HL is probably the only game many of these kids have ever played and they have no idea what spectating is. I'm from the quake 1 days when it was a big part of the game. I suspect I don't have an answer because no one here knows it. HL is cheating you guys out of a real game. Explore your options!

You can spectate in HL2DM.

In console, type "spectate" to spectate a player. Pressing space switches through the view modes and pressing MB1/MB2 cycles through the players. To exit spectator mode, type "jointeam 0".

Are you serious? I haven't been able to find this information anywhere. I did try it, though. I typed "spectate" into the console and nothing happened. I even tried typing a players name after spectate but still got nothing. BTW, what is MB1 and MB2?

EDIT: It seems you're right. I see that in a very recent Steam update they have added a spectatormode. The server I tried probably had the feature turned off. Thanks for the info.
