I was furious to find out that my hl2 was stricken with a terrible stuttering 'disease'. After hitting the forums and finding out it was an abundant annoyance I was almost relieved i didn't have the other symptoms people were claiming. Mainly the memory could not be "read" error.

Well after readjusting my moniters refresh rater in an attempt to eliminate the screen tearing which also plagues my game, I gave hl2 a whirl. I also wanted to get rid of the harsh lines that seperate the draw in of texture quality. Switching to 800x600 usually helps this for me. Not satisfied with the jagged edges of that resolution, i decide to throw in a dash of anti-aliasing, yum. BUT THEN, BAM! Blah Blah Blah memory could not be "read" Blah.

Gasp! Could that really be the infamous error?! Another contribution to my graphically buggy, stuttery, but GREAT game, half-life 2.

So i restart hl2 hoping it was only a momentary issue. Uh oh, 'video mode warning' failed to set video mode - resetting to defaults. game will now restart with new video settings.

*clicks ok*

Bang! same error! *clicks ok again*

Oh boy, it's starting! But... it's running in a window... Okay maybe it's just a safe mode kind of thing.

*applies full screen settings*

BAM, THE MEMORY COULD NOT BE READ

woo, yay. I can only play in a window now. I think i'm going to give up on computer games.

My rig is as follows:
p4 3.0ghz
geforce 5300 pcx (crummy card, but runs source well :O )
512 ram

Any help would be appreciated. Maybe this will give some info as to the cause of the error.

What happens when you switch off AA?

They are working on the problem, it says here.

I got the memory problem once myself because, bizarrely, HL2 decided to repeatedly shut off my harddrive mid-game until one time it couldn't find the part of the drive it was using for virtual memory and crashed. Doh. Then it made Windows load at 1/4 speed from then on until a System Restore fixed that. :hmph:

Ha, that's a drag. I envy the individuals that haven't been forced to go through these extreme annoyances. I managed to fix the problem by switching back to 1024 then going to fullscreen. It won't let me run 800x600 in fullscreen anymore.
