ok... i've been ashamed for 7 years... now, i've decided i need help.

and i call upon my comrades to give me that help!
ok.. scary games (like the copy of AvP 2 i practically stole) scare me. lol, but since i know they're scary, i won't play them... and i know i'm missing out! but i can't bring myself to play it! i'll install it, get to the menu screen, and think of something else to do...

please, if anyone can help, or even has the balls to admit they have the same problem... please do so... thanks for anyone's help in advance

I felt the same about System Shock 2. For 2 years i didn't play it, then i finally worked up the balls to do it and it turned out to be one of the best games i've ever played. And it was definately the scariest

Just play it. Take baby steps and eventually get through the game. What are you gonna do for Doom 3 if you don't get over this :)?

oh man AvP scared the shite out of me. i get teary eyed just thinking about it. though th epredator is savage.

I'm somewhat the same. I'm a wuss when it comes to scary games and movies. I jump at pretty small things. But I still love to play and watch them. It's kind of strange. For some reason I love the feeling of being really scared. Get's the heart going.

Oh, and you should try Thief 3. =) Took me about 4 hours to get through just one level it was so scary.

If you can, try to rent/buy the game "Clive Barker's Undying" Its not the scariest game but it will sure make you jump

I haven't played the actual game, just the demo, but I heard that the "cradle" level is scary as hell. I'm a horror enthusiast, so would it be possible to tell me why that level is so scary? Maybe you could PM me?

Just boot it up, you will never regret it! (put on a fresh pair of undies). I dont recommend Doom III you may just soil yourself one to many times :P I am a huge fan of AVP2 (suuuuuuper game) and found the atmosphere is the highlight and crown jewel of the game.

WTF am i saying?! master?! anyway. thats why i started this thread RE4 and F.E.A.R.; Doom 3 and :insert hyped, scary game:... the great experiences! i don't wanna miss out... i need to get over it! everyone's offering have been great so far, but any more help would be great... it's always that 1 way that 1 person puts it that makes it all clear...

I have this problem for Horror films, but not so much games (the control aspect assures me I am on top of the situation) I sometimes leave Horror films or refuse to start them, but they are great for thrill and social fun. So some times I miss out. I even get scared at bad horror (ala Blair Witch 2) and I cant stand all the mysterious supernatural infinite pain stuff. I get the heeby jeebys.

i'm the exact opposite! knowing i'm in control andthat I have to fight and I have to make the choices... thats the factor for me... i eat scary movies as a evening snack!

Scary movies get to me sooo bad ): it's awful somtimes il be like uh-oh this movie will bug me hours after it's over D: I have a problem in that I will overanalyze and fret over the plot long after the movie (mostly only pertains to movies that involve ghost / supernatural forces commiting violence or cultist activities) I just literally cant stand the fear. but for games I love and eat them up ;D. Then later I get scared that the stuff could go after me! Or that I will become victim to a supernatural force ): and I just get terrified because so little is known about it! and then of course posting this will probably get me teased / flamed

Alright sure. I don't really want to give anything important away as I don't wish to ruin the game for you, but I can describe my own experience with it. I'll just start off by saying that I'm a pretty big wuss when it comes to scary stuff, even though I love it. And this was one of the best scary levels in any game I've ever played in my opinion. So anyway....

All through playing the game the story has slowly been building up to this one level called the cradle. You've been given hints and warning that something truly horrible is going on at this place and you have to go find out just what it is. There's stories of horrific murders and mutilations in dark alleys. And everything leads to the cradle, which is an old orphanage that turned into an insane asylum and was then abandoned.

Basically, why it's so scary is it turns your own tactics as a thief against you. All through the game you've been slowly sneaking around in the dark trying to stay out of sight. Well, that's all fine and dandy for the first part of the game. No one knows your around and you can evade your enemies rather easily. But once you enter the cradle it's completely different. Once you enter the basement and the door shuts cutting off your exit, you get the distinct feeling that you're not the only thing that is sneaking around in the shadows. The whole place is dark and creepy. As you hug the wall and slowly crawl along you here things. You pass a open doorway carefully and suddenly hear footsteps behind you. You jump around and peer into the opening only to find nothing there. So you continue on, creeping deeper into the depths of the basement. You continue to hear noises around you, the gentle swish of something brushing against the wall, the patter of soft footsteps following you down the dark hallway, or the slam of a doorway somewhere above you. Yet there is nothing ever seems to be there.....

From there it just intensifies, using sound effects and disturbing imagery to build up tension in the player. I don't really want to say much else, as it could ruin some of the surprises. I'll just add that I was playing this level at about 2am alone in my house with all the lights turned off and the music and bass turned way up. Suffice it to say I almost had a heart attack on three seperate occasions. I ended up staying up all night playing it too.

Just remember, it's all just in your mind.......you hope.:)

But on a serious note and getting back to the topic at hand, it's good to remember that the fear is just in your head. Your the one that is actually scaring yourself. I mean none of the scary game or movies you see are actually real, so really the fear is just in your mind. You cause the fear by convincing part of yourself that the things happening are real, even though they're not. To get past that you just need to maintain a certain attitude or point of view.

I remember when I was a kid I couldn't watch any scary movies as I'd be completely freaked out for weeks afterward. I was always afraid of the dark too. But slowly as I grew up I was able to seperate what I saw in movies from reality. Now it really doesn't affect me much. I still get scared a lot while I'm actually viewing a scary movie, but I pretty much just forget about it once it's done and it doesn't bother me anymore. You just have to try to view it differently then you view real things. Perhaps looking at it from a more technical or intellectual standpoint might help. By this I mean you can realize while watching something that the creators are trying to scare you. You can then sort of pick it apart and analyse it from this point of view. You can start to examine just how exactly they constructed it to have its desired effect on an audience. That can help to pull you out of the immediate experience and see it in a somewhat different, and hopefully less scary, light.

saw in theatres, changed my life forever, still scared of little girls D:

concerning the cradle in thief. another thing that is shocking about playing the cradle level is usually in the game you dont mind if people like city guard get close to you, you have some confidence, or playing around with the physics, having some fun ya know.

but in the cradle, its like you seriously dont want to get close to those 'people', you dont want to play with the physics, you want to get the hell out of there! being heard/seen in the cradle is seriously something you dread. i played my best as a thief in that level because the consequence was real fear, so i didn't want to screw up :)

anyways, if you want to overcome(partially anyway) the fear though, you should do it gradually. one thing that helps a lot is having a TV on while you are playing. like a comedy show or something(that is if you can manage a tv to be in the same room), or a pleasant radio talk show. then i would suggest playing during the day with ample light in the room. turn down the volume on the computer, have tv/radio volume on medium.

i would start there, and as your playing a scary game, then gradually take things out one at a time. until you feel comfortable. just being in the same room with a light hearted voice on tv/radio always gets rid of any fear i have, but at the same time i can still enjoy a game

omg?!
