wow today i brought my computer over to my friends house to play hl2 on his tv and i have onlly one word to say...wow...we set my comp up to have 57 inch high definition tv and set it up with 6.1 surround sound speakers...trust me, if you thought the game was great..you havent seen anything yet. it makes the experience alot better and you get a much clearer view on everything
If you havent tried to hook it up to a nice tv and speakers, i highly suggest you try this

p.s. if you have tried a setup similar to this post your experiences with it!

I'm getting a 27" lcd hdtv in about 4 days. It's primarily a tv but it doubles as a pc monitor, can't wait to try this game on 16:9

Well, I might not get as good experince as that, but I run it in 16:9 aspect ratio on a CRT (I adjusted the monitor so that it displays it correct with black bars on top and bottom). Also I have 5.1 headphones so I get a little wannabe hi-def experience. :p All I can say is that I'm never going back to the 4:3 ratio. I did and I thought it was the ugliest thing ever. Also, I love that the widescreen extends the feild of view, helps me a bit in Counter Strike.

oh yea i forgot to mention i had it set to the 16:9 feature

I thought I had it good but my friend has the same setup you just described and it's ridiculous on an HDTV that huge. I told him next time he's gonna be away for a day that he has to lend me the keys so I can play through the whole game on that TV.

I'd like to play on my 36 inch t.v. but i dont really know how to connect it and all that. Is it out the graphics card or optical cable? and into what plug on the tv?

Is jelous. :|

Optimumly, your tv would have a dvi or analog monitor input. You'd just run your graphics card into it like any another monitor.

I played it on a 42" with 5.1 dobly simulated (don't have an optical out cuz that was extra), it was insane.

I used to play CS:S on my PC in the lounge, via S-Video on a 32" Philips widescreen TV. I never actually tried it in Widescreen mode, but that was mainly because the TV didn't seem to support it (it's a CRT).

I recently came into the possession of a 27" widescreen LCD and HL2 looks fooking great. Sadly the highest resolution is 1360 x 768, but it still performs superbly in widescreen, the extra 'width' makes it more enjoyable to play.

700 UP! Yay! ;)

i am helping my Grampa set up a home theater system in his basement. It will have a HD Projection screen TV that will be 8ft wide and 6ft tall with 7.1 surround sound speakers. Man i hope his Projection screen TV has a proper input into a computer. (Runs to start look for the model number of the TV)

UPDATE: Yes it does have S-video SWEET! Man once this room is done i hope my Grampa like HL2 and CS:S. Now all i have to do is talk him in to running a ethernet cable down into the basement.

Most video cards TV output is through s-video cables. So your TV needs to have an s-video input. Some newer LCDs and Plasma TVs have monitor inputs.. but most video cards don't have two monitor outputs.. so you'd have to unplug the wire going to your monitor and plug in the TV that way. Much easier to just use s-video.

yea it's cool. I have a 55 inch widescreen phillips HDTV and 7.1 surround sound. I guess im on top of the mountain also.

if you are playing on an hdtv with s video, you are not on the mountain, let alone the top of it. the only way to be on top of the mountain is using component cables at the least. s video cannot push hdtv resolutions.

yea were getting a hdmi connector soon we hope...

I have a LCD projector that can display up to 1024x768 resolution and screen sizes up to 300 inches, which is crazy. It's neat, but I think the best possible image quality I can squeeze out of HL2 is on my trusty MultiSync LCD1765 monitor in widscreen "run in a window" mode.

Anyone else try this? I know people are generally down on 'windowed' graphic modes, but other than seeing part of your desktop in the backgound, it's totally gorgeous, and IMO, the optimal way to experiance HL2(unless you have a true widescreen monitor).

Big TV does have that certain aesthetic though...there's nothing quite like playing CS:S on a large white wall, with life-sized terrorists.

just buy the ati hdtv adapter and use components if your tv has the inputs. its like $30 at newegg.
