With David Blaine's advice. I didn't push it particularly far. Apparently most people can do 3:30 (Houdini's record) with these instructions taken from 4HWW:
DON'T TRY THIS UNDERWATER BECAUSE YOU CAN EASILY BLACKOUT AND DIE.

Equipment:
Stopwatch (http://www.online-stopwatch.com/full-screen-stopwatch/)

Definitions:

Deep breathing: “Deep breathing” involves taking a big breath in through the mouth, holding for one second, and then exhaling for 10 seconds through your mouth through your almost-closed mouth with tongue pressed against your lower teeth. It should be a hissing exhalation and make a “tsssssss…” sound. All breathing and exercises are performed though the mouth.

Purging: “Purging” involves a strong exhalation as if you were trying to blow a toy sailboat across a pool, followed by a big but faster inhalation. David’s cheeks were puffed out as he demonstrated the exhalation (imagine the big bad wolf blowing the pigs’ homes down). Be careful not to heave or rock back and forth, which wastes oxygen. Keep as still as possible.

Semi-purging: Breathing between the above two. More forceful than deep breathing but less forceful than full purging. Used for recovering after each time trial.

Tips for before you start:

Keep your eyes closed while holding your breath. Only open them to check the time every 30 seconds or so. This helps you stay relaxed. If you need something to think about, try going through the alphabet from A-Z and thinking of a friend's name starting with each letter. Don't panic about it, use celebrities or words if you don't have friends (Q is hard). It is normal to feel tingling, crazy vision, and start having abdominal spasms near the end if you push it. Eventually you either give up or black out, so watch out for sharp things.

The Steps:

Sit perfectly still in a position where you can relax your body
1:30 deep breathing
1:15 purging (if you feel like you’re going to pass out, do it less intensely)

Hold breath for target 1:30, no more
After 1:30:
Take 3 semi-purge breaths

1:30 deep breathing
1:30 purging

Hold breath for target 2:30 (you could probably do 3:30 on this step. Go for it if you want)
After 2:30
Take 3 semi-purge breaths

2:00 deep breathing
1:45 purging

Hold breath for as long as possible
After exhalation:
Take 3-10 hard semi-purge breaths until your recover

??
Profit

Post results or we will assume you died.

Addendum: I am not a doctor, but you probably shouldn't do this if you have heart problems, or seizures, or other weird problems.

I think I'll pass, I've got better things to do - like surf halflife2.net.

I once held my breath for 10 mins. No big deal. True story.

You guys are lame. At least try it.

I don't think it's healthy :/

lets all partake in killing brain cells!

/holds breath for 20 seconds

**** this!

You are killing more brain cells surfing the internet and not challenging yourself or discovering any of physical limits.

I could, but my blood pressure is insanely low and I black out easily in the first place. I don't like my vision going black.

I would fall down dead before reaching even one minute. Dan's trying to kill us all.

The 1:30 second is just training for 3 minutes and is ridiculously easy. Follow the breathing steps and you can do it without even feeling the slightest amount of discomfort.

We did this in college Physiology. This isn't dangerous, as long as you're sitting down while attempting it. The worst that could happen is you'll pass out for a few seconds.

there's ****ers who go for the world record (which is like 16 mins) but the hax is to breath nothing but pure oxygen for a while beforehand.

no i'm pretty sure my mind is being stimulated more than me holding my breath for 3 mins. our bodies demand oxygen 100% of the day. if not I'd be holding my breath more often

I did it for 2 min without much effort or preperation. It's fun.

I have been holding my breath for 3 years.
And I am still holding.

I used to do that while swimming. The usual kid "NUH UH, I CAN HOLD MY BREATH LONGER" routine.

I've practiced some of these for freediving following Terry Maas' advice, but I'm only good for about a minute and a half (but that's while swimming).

Holy shit, I did 3 minutes 20 secounds. Without that technique, my record was one minute ten.

That was amazing, it felt awesome too. The first 2 minutes were very relaxing.

Edit: I'm definitely doing this underwater.
