I just purchased it yesterday and when i put it into the drive it says that there is no disc in the drive. My best guess is that my drive isnt dvd compatible but if this is any half life 2 disc error or something like that then could you please post below?
EDIT: i just realized that there is a help and support section so if a moderator/ admin would move this to there that would be helpful.
EDIT 2: thank you for moving it.

not entirely... my computer is pretty old... How about exchanging it for a cd version if there is one?

Dude, get a DVD drive. Alternatively, if you have broadband, register your CD key on Steam (download Steam at Steam Powered (google is your friend...)) and then download it to your hard drive. Then, play game. Then, enjoy. Then come back and participate in our discussions here at HL2.net.

Of course, if your computer is ancient enough that it doesn't have a DVD drive, you probably can't even play HL2 anyway.

I can play all of the released windows xp games i have tried including halo, halo custom edition and the half life 2 DEMO. My computer is i believe 2001 so about 5 1/2-6 years old. I will look into the steam stuff... one min

EDIT: i have steam and i was wondering what to do now.

Lets not waste people's time here, do you have a DVD drive or not? Go to my computer and read if it says CD or DVD drive. If you don't have one, you cannot play HL2.

Secondly, Halo has much lower system requirements than HL2, so comparison = irrelevant. How well did the HL2 demo run, if it did at all?

Lastly, if you have bought a DVD version without having a DVD drive you may well be giggled at in the playground tomorrow. CD versions are in the US only, Europe has the DVD versions. (Except the GOTY editions which are globally DVD I believe). I would suggest investment in a DVD drive since the transition to DVD several years ago.

The advice to activate the game through Steam and download the content won't work either, I've tried it. So your option is to buy the game through Steam, and return the retail copy you've bought. The Steam version is cheaper but without a case. But remember it's a rather big download so you'll need broadband. I think I need a lay down now...

OVER ALL EDIT/ SUCCESS!:
I installed it on my sisters new computer and it is permanently attached to my steam account so i am about to install it on this com, thank you all for your help!

Yep, got it up!:E Thank you all for your help! I will now be a part of this forum and if there are any a discussion of mods. Speaking of which are there a modding community or mods for the game?

Half-Life has some of the best mod communities I've seen. Very popular, very awesome. You picked the right game, sir. :)

Well, were can i get source? i know it comes with the game but were would the folder be?

Just Source SDK. I don't know what Base is useful for, but SDK is moreso. :P
