I came across the Computer Games section of the Guinness Book of World Records 2006. This is what it said:

Guinness Book of World Records 2006 said:
MOST ACTION GAMERS PLAYING ON A SINGLE SERVER
On 27 November 2004 a team from Microsoft and Unisys (both Sweden) sustained 1,073 computer gamers playing Counter-Strike on a single Unisys ES7000 server. The event took place as part of DreamHack Winter 2004 in Jonkoping, Sweden.

Was anyone else aware of this? More importantly, did anyone take part?
I find playing on a 64 person server quite difficult, but 1,073? Thats not possible.

For anyone who owns this book, its on page 180.

That's impossible unless they created a custom map with that many spawns. They must've included spectators in which it's quite possible, if not plain crazy.

Thats what the book says. Nothing about custom maps though.

They say the most gamers on a single server and then go on to state "on a single Unisys ES7000 server". So are they in different game sessions just all hosted on the same box?

Hahahah what it means is that there were multiple servers being hosted on teh same computer. And that with all the servers combined, there were that many gamers.

yes like Asus and estrides said, it's games hosted on a computer, not players in a server.

They should try 1000 players on one map though, that'd be fun. Wonder if Source supports map big enough to prevent stacking :naughty:

Did it run ok?

Yeah, no problems at all. It was open for everyone to join, not just for us on the lan. They didn't have any lag either, but they had a 5Gbit connection directly to two of our national backbones... can't really get better than that.

Source can maximally handle 255 players. GoldSrc only 64 :|
