Its the number on the right hand side of the player info wen you press TAB, its how laggy you are. To play source you need Broadband really, and have a ping under 70 or so. 56ker have a 300 ping and lag like hell, and it ruins the game for others. So they are usually kicked. So if you are 56k its time to join the broadband revolution, with the 80% of the world that already has it.

Depends how closely he lives to the server. If hes based near enough next door to it, hes likely to get that type of ping, but on the majority of european servers id expect 200+. 150 in my opinion is bad anyway.

edit: If you have broadband, i'd suggest you check your internet settings in steam to make sure its set on BB rather than 56k, that can lag you.
Oh and always search on filters for servers in europe. They are always less laggy, and theres no annoying amer...nah just joking guys

Ping time is the time that it takes for your computer to send a ping packet and get a response from the "pinged" host.

when searching for servers, sort them by ping (or latency dont remember what steam calls it) and then go to the lowest ones

Yer im his mate hes talking about. I am on a 56k and heres proof my ping is that low, you might of seen me play in sum servers
And no i was not "next door" to the server either. my average ping is 120/150 (no lies)

Oh and no 56k players dont lagg the server out..latency is only the time it takes to get to the server. Broadband users would waste the server more than a 56k user. anybody who thinks that 56k can lagg the server out is a moron tbh.

I used to have dial-up but just got Charted High-Speed 3MB Cable service last Wednesday. I did have a normal ping of 500. I now get a ping of 25-50 but, for some reason, I only getting half my speed (1.5MB) so that means I'd get a 10-25 ping? Eh.

I really don't like (tried not to use "hate") people who reply with: "Get broadband..." because, in some places, it's just not available... like where I live. It was JUST made available because somebody got their head outta their butt.

Um... admins really never kicked me even with a 500 ping... I dunno why one would w/ 300. I dunno. Play on servers w/ a 8-10 player limit and that'll help.

i sorted it out i'm now averagin at around 50/60
for some reason my steam internet setting was on Lan/1m
too high for me

Not quite, ping time has mostly to do with the distance to the pinged host, not so much the speed of the connection.

Apparently cl_cmdrate +80 masks your ping, to make it look as if you have a ping of 5.

People have said this prevents them being autokicked.

Yeah but then some admins kick them because they accuse them or Rate Hacking, very annoying for the poor B******* that do it to cover up their ping.
