NEW YORK In what seems destined to become one of the most yakked about photos of the month, if not year, a Reuters photographer today seems to have captured President George W. Bush scribbling a note to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during a session at the United Nations. On the note is a message revolving around the need to take a "bathroom break."

The photo by Denver-based Rick Wilking, taken over a man's shoulder, shows an official -- identified in the caption (at Reuters' official site) as President Bush -- scribbling in pencil on a small white piece of paper that already contains the words: "I think I MAY NEED A BATHroom break?"

The caption at the Reuters photo site reads:

"U.S. President George W. Bush writes a note to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during a Security Council meeting at the 2005 World Summit and 60th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York September 14, 2005. World leaders are exploring ways to revitalize the United Nations at a summit on Wednesday but their blueprint falls short of Secretary-General Kofi Annan's vision of freedom from want, persecution and war."

The photo, which naturally is already making the rounds of the Web, can be found here.

Wilking, a former Reuters staffer in Europe, took several other photos today at the U.N. posted at the Reuters site. He recently covered the hurricane disaster in the Gulf, and on Sept. 2 was profiled at E&P Online.

He told E&P's Jay DeFoore at that time that he decided to leave New Orleans only after his laptop and two cameras were stolen from his car parked near the convention center. But he vowed to return to cover the "human tragedy."

One online bio of Wilking describes him as a "presidential photographer" with 12 years experience shooting pictures in Washington or on various White House assignments. It says he started his career as a photojournalist for the Colorado Daily in 1974.

This is damming evidence. I thought Bush was a robot.

ya I've seen it a number of times ..just pointing out that it looks a little suspect ..look at the haze surrounding his finger on the pencil ..seems like it was faded a bit to make his hand stand out more ..I could be wrong and I tend to believe that bush cant think for himself

Can't think of himself? Isn't he just telling his staff that he could be leaving during a UN meeting? I really doubt any world leader would just walk out without telling anyone.

I believe so to. The paper under the note, the letters disappear before they get to his hand. I call shenanigans.

While Mr Bush called on the General Assembly to act on terror, in a side room an African minister was bemoaning the fact that only a third of her population has access to a decent toilet.

You guys are getting all up in a fit because he asked if a bathroom break would be wise at a big meeting?

I guess when you guys ask to be excused from the table, you should consider yourself puppets unable to think for yourselves too? lol <shakes his head in shame>

Yeah, Kofi seems to be a 'half empty' kinda guy, and George a 'half full'. I'd always imagined it would be hte other way around.

You mean:

Oh Noes!!! George Dubya Bsuh Urinates!!!! The War Of The Wrlds Si Here!! The Ende Is Nigh!!!!1 ?

Looks like the hand was put there. Unless text suddenly disappears around hands.
EDIT: That... and I thought Presidents used Type Writers, Pens, or Computers to write with.

YEah the writing seems to be way too clear. Either that or G Dub has the sexiest, clearest writing I have ever seen.

It's his magic presidential pen.

Heh. The funny thing is, I was watching Daily SHow with Jon Stewart. He showed that picture, and the audience roared with side splitting laughter. If you wanna talk about puppets, its those audience members and their sense of humor. I mean, how could something like that be so funny, anyways? Its not like Jon made a wise crack, he just read out the letter.

It was the delivery... A president is usually cast as a leader of men, a ruler of nations, the man who has access to the big red button! so its funny to think of such a powerful figure asking about a bathroom break.. the same reason it was funny to see a chair break under Cary Grant or Dean Martin... they were such dignified/smooth people that seeing them fall over, or get a pie in the face was a good laugh.

I think the whole thing can best be surmised with: "cute. :imu: "

the message itself is genuine:

"Once he saw what it said, Hershorn decided the note was interesting and worth publishing. The white parts of the picture were overexposed, so a Reuters processor used Photoshop to burn down the note. This is a standard practice for news photos, Hershorn says, and the picture was not manipulated in any other way."
