Would you get up at 5:30am to take an 8 hour exam you didnt study for (nor is required for graduation)?

Details:
-Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
-8 hours long
-Not required for my graduation in May.
-Multiple choice
-Can take it as many times as I want.
-Next test date is in October.

What would you do? I'm in my last semester of an engineering degree taking 18 credits, so I haven't had time to study for this thing. Doing well in my classes and getting my degree is more important to me.

Thanks brosephs.

If I could take it as many times as I want, I would take it... figure out how much shit I don't know, and then study my ass off and take it again.

Doing the bare minimum is my style sometimes, but I wouldn't recommend not doing it simply because it's not required for graduation.

Yea take it, there doesn't seem to be any negative to the impending failure.

Yes. I whould wing it.

Edit: God damn it I voted no. Count it as a yes.

umm am I missing something? If it isn't required for graduation what is the point of taking it?

Thirded for "don't take it." Unless there's a reason you'd want to take it. You get some kind of accreditation for passing?

The previous three posts all reflect how I feel.

Passing the exam is the first step in becoming a professionally licensed engineer (you get to put the PE title after your name).

I should also add I already paid to take this exam in February, haha. Bunch of people pressured me into taking it w/ them even though I knew I wouldn't have time to study.

In Canada we usually do this sort of exam after graduation , which makes more sense because you also need a few months (48 months) of work experience to get professionally licensed.

Congrats on completing your engineering degree, out of curiosity did you do an internship ?.

edit: I voted no , you should take your time and prepare yourself for it. Its quite an important component of your future career.

Well I mean, it is still testing your intelligence. In reality, isn't that what tests are for? I think you should take it. But still, it should be your choice. 8 hours is kinda long.

I already paid to take this exam
Well that changes everything.

Also if it's the first step to becoming licensed, even though you haven't studied, how well do you know your stuff? Do you think you know the material enough to give it a try?

You might as well anyway, since you spent money.

This.

No point in doing it if you don't have to.

The point is that he'll know what to expect, know what to study, and be much more prepared to take it the next time and vastly improve his score. If thats not a good enough reason to take it, I don't know what is.

Thanks for the congratulations but I'm not quite finished yet, haha. Graduation isn't until May 21st. And yeah, I've worked for the Army Corps of Engineers...you know...the organization that killed all those people in New Orleans.

And I think I'm just going to take it...who knows, I may even pass. Evidently you only need a 50% and I think I could swing that by just making nothing but educated guesses, haha. But like I said, there's no harm in trying. Wrong answers don't hurt you and it doesn't go on any record that I failed the exam X amount of times before passing it. I'm a 3.5 GPA student so I feel like I may be able to swing a passing grade tomorrow..we'll see.

Noooooooooo. I graduated in engineering. Absolutely nobody I knew took that exam -- this includes both people working and in grad school.

As far as I know, it is useful for one type of engineering career: Consultant

However, I read little further and saw that you already paid for it -- go ahead and take it so you don't waste your money.

Yes, obviously you will fail it, but atleast you will get a hint of whats on it when you retake it later for extra points. I mean, it cant harm your overall grade can it? Depends on how the system works.

I voted yes. you've paid for it, you might as well take it and see what's expected of you for next time. If you pass, then that's also good!

You should at least flip through it if it's somehow important, if not take it seriously.

just take it, don't be a bitch.

only bitches procrastinate unimportant tests.

I cruised through with the bare minimum back when I studied Game Design, the full fruition of my foolishness hit me when I got an "You've wasted $2,600 on this subject" e-mail from my programming teacher (**** programming) and I can now put "Art College Dropout" on my resume. :D

These days I try to be a dork in school wherever I can, probably because it's stuff that I actually want to do for the rest of my life. (That, and where I'm studying will give me 75% of my course fees back if I do awesome)

But why, why would you do that to yourself?? Screw the money! Tests suck!!!!

I mean, if it becomes necessary in the future for you to take it, do it then, but for the love of god, spare yourself now. There's just no point in putting yourself through that unless you have to.

IMO, you already ****ed up the test and it doesn't matter if you take it or not.

Anyway, it seems the importance of a PE depends on your particular type of engineering degree as well as the area you plan to work. For example, if you ever wanted to start your own company or become that badass engineer that leads a project.

Of course, I'm EE so I didn't give two shits (perhaps only one-half shits) about the PE stuff.

I only said yes because it's multiple choice.

Do they only have those type of exams in America?

I thought that all engineers were supposed to get a PEng in order to work at higher levels (above junior) . I guess its different in the U.S .

Am I missing something or is there an elephant in this room that everybody's casually ignoring?

AN EIGHT HOUR EXAM

WHAT

WHAT???

(I guess if you feel you can afford those eight hours, instead of using them to study for your finals, then go ahead)

**** you guys for suggesting I take that lol. Just got back and I'm absolutely brain dead...but I think I may have actually passed it.

So if you fail does it make you look bad or can you somehow 'make it disappear'

I just want to pretend that the OP is an android in desperate need of conducting it's own opinion, but no matter how hard it tries, it cannot.

:(
