I need help...please help

Hello, I have no real problem with half life 2, it is my dad. He was really happy to get it, but now he can't play it...steam works fine and he has 100% download or whatever...its just he clicks to play the game and then it goes to the loading half life two little pop up thing and the dots...then it turns off and nothing happens. he has reinstalled the game twice and to no avail. Could someone please help me try to figure this out?

Does your dad have his own copy with cd key?
do you have dsl?
Do you have a software firewall?
What kind of computer is it? CPU? video? RAM?
Did you defrag?
did you look for spyware or malware?

ok

he owns his own copy and key...he has a athlon 2700 2.2 gigs...geforce 4 ti 4200...512 mb of ram...he build his own...he did defragment right before...and he searched for spyware/adware...and deleted it...im not sure what else there is for him to do...maybe reformat...i told him this game is worth it.
