i need some fps advice

well, the problem is this. i have a pretty decent system:

Laptop: Mobile P4 2.4GHz
384 RAM
128 Ati Mobility Radeon IGP

my video card is DirectX 7, i think. In CS:S i get pretty good performance with forcing DX 8 and textures in medium. But in HL2, using DX 7, i get no more than 35 ish fps even with low settings. I have monitor at 85Hz so that not the problem. I would ave tought my sistem could do better, and buying more laptop ram is well expesive.
Also, my system uses about 250 RAM from task manager even getting rid of most things. why?
I think i should be getting much better fps in HL2, no? any suggestions would be very helpfull. thanks in advance.

Sorry to be brutal, but that's not entirely a decent system. Your graphics components are integrated (hence 'I' GP), not seperate. This means that your graphics system doesn't have hardware support of advanced direct X features, and that it uses your system RAM for memory. The only thing you can do is get more main RAM.

thanks for the reply. unfortunately, the graphics card is not upgradable. i will try to get more ram. what i wonder is why such a difference in performance between CS:S and HL2?

Well, yeah, you can't remove the intergrated graphics, but if your computer has an AGP slot on it's motherboard (which I would expect it to), then you can add a proper graphics card, and that will take over from the intergrated graphics.

I made I little typo there, it has to have a space between the dxlevel and the 80 part. But I'm sure you figured it out.

on average, from the task manager, i get around 32 processes running from startup. i think that's too much. how many do the rest of you have? thanks.

ok i have nforce2 onbord geforce4 and i can play hl2 ive overclocked the onbord a tiny bit but still can play
im getin radeon9800pro erm 25jan so thats tommozs yey!
