I just bought Halflife 2 and I installed it with the 5 discs. Then a program called "Steam" made me make an account. I made the account and whenever I click on the Halflife 2 icon on my desktop, Steam pops up. It doesn't have any option to start a new game or play online, it says I need to purchase the game.. which I have already done.

Am I doing something wrong? please help.

Either you pirated the game, bought a second hand copy, or somebody ran across your CD key via a keygen.

Why in gods name did you make a second thread anyway?

I bought the game at Harvey Norman. Packaged. Brand new. The activation code has already been used...

GO HARVEY, GO HARVEY, GO HARVEY!
*cough* Er, if the CD is already being used there's no way for you to legally use it without tracking down the guy who used it. You can try complaining to the store but it's unlikly to get you anywhere. Sorry mate, you got screwed.

What everyone else says. In the furture though, I'd suggest buying any game directly off Steam. Sure, there have been some complaints about it, but for the most part, its a decent program. Plus there is no worry about second-hand copies or anything.

He could have dial-up you know.

True enough, though I'm sure that some people would perfer to spend a loooooong time downloading the game (provided you have no dl limit), than spending another $50 on a messed up game (Yes I know in this case he has to buy a new game either way, but as a future reference).

I look at it this way. One uses gas, one doesn't. :D

Care to guess which? :)
