i need some help...

i havent been able to play css, hl2:dm, or anything from steam online. i can play off, but not on. i have tried everything to fix it. this has been going on since i downloaded the update for css that put de_tides and bots in the game. i have tried everything including reverifying my cache. nothing works. so before i reinstall everything, i have a few questions.

1. will i lose all of my hl2 saves, and can i back them up. if so how?
2. when i reinstall hl2, will i be able to reenter my cd code even though i have entered it in once before.
3. could this possibly correct my problem?

Well in answer to number 2: when you reinstall you don't need to put in your code again. It'll be tied to your steam account that you created. Just log into that and you should be able to play again

Also, have you tried deleting your Half-life 2 folders? Not hte GCF's but the folders? Then try and play again and the GCF's should move all the right folders back, and then you can try.

Also, could you tell us the error you get when trying to play? and a few system specs too

when i play any game online and i try to join somebodys server, this happens...

a grey rectangular box comes up, and 2 little bars are filled up. on the top of the box, it says "connecting to server". after about 20 seconds, this message comes up on the box, "connection failed after 4 retries."

i can create a server,play halflife2 single player, but i cant join anyone elses server.

i have a bad pc, but ive had hl2 since launch, so i doubt this is the problem; pentium 4 2.4 ghz, 512 ram, nvidia mx 440 128 mb

im really a noob when it comes to computers, so i didnt really understand what you talked about deleting GCFs (what are they)

Ok, open up steam. On the menu, click the "Settings" box. then when that opens, click the "Internet" Tab, and make sure it matches your internet speed. Or if it doesn't have your internet speed, select the closest thing to it. If you don't know your connection speed, go

Then when you try to join a game, it will (hopefully) load ok. Also, check to make sure that the lower the "latency" the server has, then the fast your game will be, and the less you'll jump.

my speed is 1.1 megabits, and under settings it was set to 1M, so it was right already. i tried joining a few games with my internet speed under 768 kb, but didnt make a difference

thanks so much so far for your help. have any other suggestions, or do you think i have to delete everything. right now i am backing up my game saves on a dvd in case i do have to delete everything

Well, I can't think of anything else I'm afraid . I think the best option would be to delete everything and start over.

thank you so much. i have my game backed up, so i dont mind deleting and reinstalling
