I just downloaded the latest zone alarm free version, after being told by someone that the older version of zone alarm i used to have might be stopping my comp from connecting to another (who has the internet). My computer recognises a connection with the other, but i can't ping it. Any ideas?

btw: you cant seem to switch the zone column to 'trusted' from 'internet' on the firewall tab- a solution i assume only works with the bought version.

exactly...is your computer a dell?
on our family computer (A Dell) zonealarm stops the computer from even connecting to the internet. I don't use it simply because..... i dunno

Zonealarm isa bit temperamental. When I first got it it would occasionally screw up MSN despite me giving it permission. It would require MSN to be running before I switched Zonealarm on sometimes. Maybe connecting before turning on zonealarm would fix your problem bear.

As for the first problem - yeah I think it's only in paid-for version that you can relax the firewall enough to allow that kind of outgoing stuff.

SHATTERED DREAMS.... thing is, i cant get rid of all of zone alarm so that it no longer 'firewalls' my connection. i.e. i can't seem to fully delete it.
i really don't want to have to resort to reformatting my hd.

And no huntingbear, it aint a dell. its a amd 3200+ with albatron k8x800proII

Zone Alarm is very tempremental, but then again most software firewalls are... i'd reccommend ditching it for a good hardware firewall.

is there any way of removing all traces of a firewall (i.e zone alarm) from my computer? Any programs?

Well, what seems to be your problem with uninstalling it with add/remove progs?

When I can't fully uninstall a prog, I resort to deleting it in windows explorer, then going to Run>regedit, and deleting every trace of it I can find in the registry - usually nearly always found in local machine/software/[developer name]. It's very messy, and mildly risky, but I figure if I can't be rid of it any other way...
