half life can run in offline mode? can i not run the same account on two systems if one is in off line mode? It seemed to work fine on counter strike, even in the same lan server. why wont half life work?

If one will we in online mode and other in offline mode it will run. I not recommend it for you. One account one person.

it is one account, for one person. both are my pcs and I'd like it to work becuase its an extra computer for lan parties. If i can run one copy on all the computer for lan, that will save me a lot of money. I love valve and the games they make and in no way wish to pirate anything from them ( and i have not and will not ). I dont see this as pirating becuase its my computer, if any one wants to play it at my house then so be it, but if the pc gets sold or traded, I will remove my account info from it and probably uninstall steam/source engine. This should work, and did work once, then it didnt work at all. Single player games such as half life 2, after being fully updated should be playable, no? all i get is " This operation could not be performed while steam is in offline mode " ( or something to that nature ). I should think it should work seeing as it has already worked once. However the fact that im running it on Ubuntu via wine might make a difference.. should it not?

I believe you need to be connected to the internet at least once, and then you can go into offline mode. Offline mode is meant for laptops that are about to get disconnected, and for cheap bastards with dial-up.

I was, I installed with the Episode 1 dvd ( only installed HL2: DM to get the source engine, the biggest part of all the games ) then downloaded half life 2 and CSS through steam and updated them fully. I can get into play when i log in online, but when i go and restart steam to offline mode, nothing works, at least not anymore.

Offline mode does work with LAN parties. If you connect each machine to the internet alternatively, go into offline mode, then connect them all to your LAN, you should be able to play together.

I'm not entirely sure how legal it is, but as far as I was aware, it was fine.

I understand this, thats why i said I've already done it. What im trying to find out is why its not working now.

Oh, right. Yeah...

Hm... my friend couldn't go into offline mode at one point, but he updated his games and was able to...

Is there not an offline mode button somewhere?

yes, steam>file>restart in offline mode.

this restarts steam and put it in offline mode. when ever you reboot and wish to start steam again it asks "would you like to: Go online, or start in offline mode "

I click start in offline mode, it boots up steam.. when i go to the games page its all there fine and dandy. when i click launch game ( I only have css, hl2:dm and hl2 installed currently ) it says " preparing to launch half life 2 (CSS: half life 2: dm.. ect.) then it says STEAM ERROR " operation could not be completed when Steam is in offline mode. "

ok, so CS:S will work in offline mode now ( after loging in online, the going back into offline mode ) but Half life 2 : DM still doesnt work ( along with HL2 )

oops, sry for the double post.
