Wanting to play

i have a dell laptop that is the big xps. It should be able to handle this game. I put in the disk then click instal. I get the message...

error 1327. Invalid drive: F:\

I also bought a newer copy of a different half life from walmart and got the same message. Can anyone please help me??????

Check your drive in My Computer. It may have a different letter. Though I'm pretty sure the installation program checks it normally.

Big xps?

the drive in my computer is D. I am not sure what kind of specs my comp has because a friend of mine gave me the laptop. I believe it to be the XPS made for gaming. I am not sure where to find the specs needed to solve my problem

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information

Sounds like you're trying to install HL2 to a drive that doesn't exist, which is bizarre, but you should be able to select which drive, folder etc. to install to when the CD boots.

So try again and adjust it to your D: drive.

i dont understand. according to My comp the disk is in drive D. How can I stop it from saying error on drive F?

When it asks you where to install, change the drive letter F to D.

Err - that would then try to install to the DVD drive, where the disk is....

Last I heard, you couldn't install onto a pre-recorded disk, especially as that is the disk he is installing FROM.

Changing it to C: would probably have better results in that situation...

when i insert the disk however..it does not give me a chance to change the drive. It says preparing installation then says the error message. What steps do I take to change the drive. Thank you for you feedback so far.

It also seems as if the steam program wont install, causing the above problem. I tried to download steam from the internet and I have the same problem when trying to install only steam. I am sorry for my nOObness; however I am confused

How can you get an "invalid drive" error when installing Steam (downloaded from net version) from your hard drive? CD drive might get a read error, but not from your C drive. Something is not right on your computer.

This is true, are you choosing the directory of where to save your files. Ensure you are choosing your hard drive which is the C: drive. Once you've downloaded Steam, you can install it like normal onto the C: drive also. If this doesn't work, then I must also say there is something very wrong your end.

Bah, D is directly above C on this keyboard.

ok...I downloaded steam from the website onto my desktop. When i click on the steam icon on my desk top...I get the exact same problem as I do with the cd...

Just do it manually. There's a change drive setting when you install it.

I would change the drive manually; however there is no chance to do this. As soon as I click on the Steam setup icon...or put in the cd...the steam installation wizard says "computing space requirements" and at the same time I get the error 1327. Invallid Drive F:\...

For a more detailed explanation of what I do is this...

1. put in disc...the half life 2 screen pops up with 4 options: install half life, visit hl2 website, visit valve website, sierra Technical support, and exit.

2. I click on install half life 2....windows installer window pops up and goes away

3. then the steam installation wizard screen along with error message appears

4. I click ok on error message...says installation ended prematurely because of an error.

Now at what point can i manually change the drive?

When i try to use steam form internet i download the setup and then try and get the same message... :(

i don't mean to be a bother...I just want to play :sniper: :x :x

That is really weird...

What should show up when you start the steam installer is:
1. Windows installer for a second
2. The steam setup welcome screen, with a button at the bottom that says Next.
After that you go through a couple setup options, and the final one is where to install the program.

So if I understand right, you get an error message before you can even click Next?
Okay try this, when the error message pops up don't click Okay, just move it out of the way and see if you can click next. If it wont let you or closes itself when you click it then I'm out of ideas :(

hmmmmmm....
thank you very much. I can move it out of the way, and the steam window says configuring drive space or something like that. I usually just assume that it stopped doing anything. I will wait and see if it continues..(please wait and listen to the music...) after 35 minutes nothing happened.
:sniper: :rolling:
it remained configuring drive space for this whole time. :flame:
WTH IS GOING ON WITH MY COMPUTER..sigh will i ever be able to play??????

also by the way I dont ever have a chance to see or click "next"

You never actually gave your specs either. Can your computer even handle HL2? I heard that Steam refuses to install on PC's that don't meet the minimum specs. Being a laptop that was (presumably) so crap that it was just GIVEN to you, my first guess would be no. How about HD space, etc? Until you forward some specs, all anyone can do is guess at your bizarre problem. With more info, we could narrow down the possible problems, but until then, we are taking pot-shots at the moon. With a blindfold on. And one hand tied behind our backs.

i understand. I will do what i can about finding out what my specs are. And this comp was given to me not because it was crap but because it was so big to carry around in Afghanistan (my friend is there in the military) he got a smaller one and gave me that one. I will post my specs very soon. thank you for all your help so far everyone.

Your friend took a computer to Afghanistan?

lol wouldnt you if you had to be there for 18 months? It is actually a very common thing.

People DIE in Afghanistan. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have time for playing HL2 if I was busy trying to survive. :O

It would depend on where he's posted, guys. He might not be a soldier.

Im not in afganistan my friend is. He is a soldier I am not

intel Pentium processor 2.00 GHz
2.00 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
NIVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra (display adapter)

not sure what other specs are but if you tell me how to find them I will provide them.

also an interesting note...i tried to install an update for adobe acrobat and got the same error message.

hope any of this helps:bounce:

Ok, from that list there is nothing to worry about there - not flash, but it will do the job. (Strangely though, that does not sound like specs for a laptop - especially the processor...???) So unless there is any damaged hardware, we can skip the hardware questions, AND stop wondering if you are trying to install it on a 286 with a 4MB graphics card and 64 MB RAM.

Next - how much SPARE hard drive space do you have?

Also, I strongly suspect you don't know how to update your drivers, therefore they would be out of date. Graphics card, sound card, motherboard, etc. Correct?

also, as I have not updated the drivers,I will assume that they haven't been updated by my friend...and I need to be refreshed on how to accomplish this

Search on google for "latest drivers" and the hardware name. Download and install. For best results use the ones from the manufacturer's website.

one of your special folders is pointing to remote drive F: or it is otherwise listed in the registry (old USB disk?). simply search the registry for F: entries and delete or correct them as necessary. of course, the main problem is that valve is snobby enough to use M$'s installer instead of a simple .inf :(
P.S. u can also use tweakui to check the special folders.

Just incase anyone still gets this problem, managed to figure it out today.

This happens because (in my case) There was previously an install of the program on a hard disk which since has either been removed or had the drive letter changed without first uninstalling the program (steam).

To fix it goto run, then type regedit. Then in the window that pops up goto software, browse the list for the makers of the software, in this case its valve. Then click the folder steam and in the window on the top left look for the registry entry called install path or something to that effect. You can either delete or edit the entry by simply changing the drive letter.

Hope this helps someone, all I was able to find is guesses and misguided trouble shooting *cough cough* this thread *cough cough* :D
