To play zee gee-tar NOW!

Not really, although I am very, very, very interested in playing the guitar. Some things though

  • Acoustic or electric?
  • Any recommended books?
  • Self-teach or tutor?
  • Any tips/pointers?

I'm not expecting to be a rock god in a week, I just really want to be able to do something which I would enjoy immensly :D

eleeeectric! got one this crimbo!!
id reccomend tutoring even though im teachng myself through the internet and books etc!!

tips: unless your not serious about playing dont buy the cheapest one! (ie an encore:()

for example get a cool one... like a washburn!!! (like meeee!!!)

also remember to get a decent amp! if ur just starting you might like one with some FX built in for you to play with!!

ps it's 'gee-tarr!' ! :frown:

Depending on the type of music what type guitar to get - Electrics are a must if you want to play with effects like your fav. bands or you may be put off if playing on an acoustic and it doesnt sound the same

Tutoring is good - much easier to learn things in groups or by example instead of off tabs and the likes (although if you can get video tuts...they r good)

Go to good tab sites that songs can be rated on and look for 4/5 star songs with many votes (not just 1 cos chances are, its the person who tabbed it). ultimate-guitar.com is one of the best...

Tab books are also good and it may be handy to learn theory and many chords and scales (boring but helpful - i never did and i am trying to now).

I agree with getting a decent amp - doesnt have to be huge just good quality and decent volume - u need to hear yourself over any cd you try to play along with...

Try and learn as many songs and styles as you can (this helped me in guitar lessons cos i learned things that i wouldnt have on my own and it helps develop your playing)

And FINALLY...of course...practice and dont give up...Stick with it..its worth it unless you have no sense of timing - Always enjoy yourself...

Thats all from me ;)

I'd go with electric, if you want to play any sort of rock music. I have an acoustic, and I don't practice much because it doesn't have the same sound.

Also, I find electric is much easier to play. Acoustic guitars are too bulky for me, and electric is nice, weighty, and compact.

oh another note - yes electrics can be easier to play and your fingers wont get as ******. The strings are lighter especially if you play with lighter gauges (thickness kinda thing)...With acoustic, your fingers must get conditioned and develop hard pads (kinda weird but cool :))

And you can take a huge rock star pose with an electric :)

Best advice I can give:
Learn on acoustic, then find your way to electric.
