I literally feel like crying. I just installed a enw fan and heatsink on my CPU, but I couldn't figure out where the small parts of the MOBO attached and whatnot. So I take it to Fry's for them to look at. 30 minutes for $35. They didn't do jack shit. My Dad starts cursing at me and going crazy. The jackass that tried to repair it didn't even have my video card plugged in. I thought that was the problem. THE PROBLEM IS: The PC turns on for 2 seconds, but then it shuts off. The MOBO light stats on however. I wait for a game forever, invest so much time in it, and when it finally arrives, I get f*cked and my family hates me. Please help, if possible, before Tuesday...

ok, dissasemble your computer completely, then wait a half hour, and put it back together, that always works for me, or complain to frys, be like

bitch, my compys F*ckued cause of u, i ll sue hoe,

or u could just cry

Dry's already sissambled it, and it's not working. My mobo light is on, but nothing else is working. This makes no sense at all.

Is the heatsink/fan powered? Is it facing the right way? If not, it could overheat rather instantly. Everything else is plugged in properly? Does the fan on it spin up at all?

I can't tell how experienced you are with assembling PCs, though the fact that you'd take it to someone else, and even pay for it gives some indication.

Not trying to rub salt in the wound; I'd really like to help if I can. I wouldn't call this a catastrophe before you have even located the cause of the problem. Hang in there.

Sounds like you screwed over your mobo.

BTW: Maybe you shouldn't have played around with it so much.

Some more info would be useful. What kind of mobo, processor, heatskin/fan? Also is it possible you have bumped your ram out of place? I know having ram out of socket will cause that to happen.

How are you able to make that assessment, given the limited information we have? Unproductive and irresponsible :P.

2600+ Barton, Shuttle AN35N-Ultra, Kingston HyperX PC4000 512MB RAM. Yes, my fans all start when I turn it on. But then everything shuts off, and only my MONO light stays on. FYI: The other day I was OC'ing my 2600+ to likw 2.29GHz. I played CS:S for like 1.5 hrs, no problems (I noticed less physics slowdowns :) ) I ran 3DMark 05 twice and the CS:S becnhamrk twice. Everything went uphill. Everything was working simply stupendous, so I decided to go to Fry's to buy a better CPU cooler. I got a Zalman Ti/Cu thingy (heatsink and fan combined) for like $37. I went home and I was forced to take all the wires off the mobo and take the mobo out of my box. I applied the thermal paste on and hitched that mofo on to my CPU (it's really big). That's when all hell broke loose. My PC would not start. It cannot be from OC'ing... b/c I went 2 days with my rig @ 2.29GHz.... and if anything, why would it fry after I install better cooling. BTW this is what my box looks like : http://buyraidmax.com/shop/catalog/images/868wbp.jpg . Mine has a 350W I believe and 4 fans.

Does it beep at all? Make sure your PC speaker is hooked up. If you need help confirming that, just ask.

I had a problem like that when one of my ram modules were fried. How many sticks of ram do you have? Is it 2 sticks of 256, or 1 of 512? If its one, do you have a spare good one to test in it?

There's no beep, and yes I have the PC speaker thing in. The green light for the ram is on, and their is a red light.
EDIT: I have 1 stick.

A red light? So, you have a series of diagnostic LEDs, then? Have you looked up what it means?

I looked up what the red LED means: CPU Overheat! Does this mean my CPU is fried? How did this happen... I put on a better cooling devide and this is what I get?

most likely it is put on wrong..did you put too little, too much themal grease? and is the heat sink mounted properly?

I was just going to say that. The heatsink probably is not on correctly. Did you put too much thermal compound on it? Did you mount it flush with the surface? Did you remove the thermal PAD?

Just reinstall the heatsink. Wipe the compound off and reapply. Don't let any compound touch the chip outside the center core.

OMG I think you guys are right! I just applied that thermal grease will nilly and now I'm going to reapply and scrape the other stuff off. I saw the other stuff and was like WTF so I left it... wil be back in 10 mins to post results!

:( I just scraped off some stuff... but there's some stuff outside the little box on the chip you are supposed to apply the grease to...should I scratch it off? BTW... I didn't use rubbing acohol to get the stuff off, I used the tip of a flathead screwdriver. IT STILL DOESN'T WORK. I feel like I'm going to cry.

Are you sure the heatsink is facing the right way and sitting properly? Have you tried the old heatsink again?

In any case, don't panic. You'll just cause an actual problem. I'm sure nothing's broken as of right now (except your brain :D).

What kind of thermal compound is it? If it's silver based then it can short your CPU if it you let it get on the little bridges on the CPU and turning the PC on.

Wipe it off and hope it is OK.

It probably is OK as it is telling you it's a thermal issue.
Most boards will tell you if the CPU is dead or even removed.

thx for taking the time to help guys. I'm trying and trying and I'm hoping that I can get my rig up tonight.

EDIT: PC is blowing all fans, but no POST screen has been achieved and I keep getting a long BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP every 5 or so seconds. What does this mean? I don't have a red light anymore which is good :p

I had something very similar happen to me. Eventually i got it working and i believe it was soemthing where the cpu fan wasent being detected, in otherwords the motherboard didnt know there was a CPU fan, look in the manual and see if theres an override key for something like that, i belivev mine was print screen? not sure i have a new mobo now.

EDIT: not sure about the beep, I hate those damn speakers!!

BREAKING NEWS!! I was able to post... and after a little bit I change my OC'ed settings back to normal and my voltage to normal. So I saved my new BIOS settings, it was about to restart, and then it crashed. Plz lord, I hope I don't have a fried motherboard. this was my first OC'ing experience... and my last.

Yes, It's probably you got the heatsync on wrong and its overheating, go into bios and check temps when booting up if you can.

Award Bios SIR! Also, when I boot, I heat this faint "kuhkuhkuhkuhkuh...kuhkuhkuhkuh" kinda of sound and it's coming from my CPU/heatsink I think.

Maybe this is what has been happening:

1 long beep memory problem
memory type added not the same
memory not seated in banks
dead chip

But its probably the heatsync, clean the chip and then replace the heatsync make sure you dont get any thermal paste on the motherboard.

I think I am unsure of how to clean the heatsink as it never works when I do it. It doesnt do 1 long beep anymore. It either POSTS or it goes on for 1 second then shuts down. :hmph:

I think he has that solved although checking what the board says for that long beep would be a good idea. ;)

Check what the beep was anyway. Clues are always good.

Th elong BEEEEEEEEEEEEp stopped after I took the RAM out and reseated it, along with the vid. card. I guess I will try w/ the heatsink thing again, but I may be out of thermal paste. As they gave me a 3/4 in. bottle that measure a 1/4 in. width.... Looks like I'll be stopping at Radio Whack for some

Jesus, a tube of thermal paste should last you the rest of your life! I don't think the paste is necessarily your problem, but in the future here is what to do:
1) Put a very small blob of paste, half the size of a pea, on the CPU and spread it with your finger. (Cover your finger with a plastic baggie)
2) Put a pea-sized blob on the bottom of your heatsink and spread it completely over the sinkusing the same method. Both the CPU and heatsink should just have a very thin film covering them. You don't want a thick layer because the heat won't dissipate properly.
3) To remove old paste use nail-polish remover and something non-metal as a scraper (any scratches in the sink will diminish its cooling abilities). I use a credit card personally to get that gunk off.

Good luck on your problem. I've experienced the same sort of thing and more often than not it's a wire plugged in where it shouldn't be. Don't give up. Even if you fried something it's just one component, not the whole computer.
