I'd really like a manual for this..

I've had Steam up for like 4 days and it has downloaded a bunch of stuff I didn't ask for and my download limit is almost at max!

Isn't there a way I can turn off the auto updates and preloads or at least see what the hell is going on in this stupid program?! I just wanna know what is pumping into my computer

So far I have:
counter-strike.gcf
half-life engine.gcf
half-life.gcf
platform.gcf

total of 797 megabytes!

I just installed steam to learn to use it before HL2 comes out, I don't have any Valve games on my computer now!

Right click in the "Play Games" menu > Properites > Do not automatically update this game

That should stop all downloading and such.

I have 12 .GCF files that equal 2.21 gigs.

Oh, and one other thing I just discovered today: is it normal to have 23 THOUSAND errorlogs??

I got 23584 error log files, total of 90 megabytes in my steam folder...

Have you ever tried to delete 23 thousand files at a time?? well.. you can't, my comp. just freezes...

hmm thats weird, I have no error logs, and things like counterstrike shouldnt auto-load..... there might be something wrong

Very wrong! Have you tried looking in any of the errorlogs to see what they say?

Heres how you can delete all those files without it crashing your computer.

Load up a command prompt (Start - run - "cmd" - Ok)
Navigate to the directory the errorlogs are in.
Type in "dir /s /b *.log > c:\log.txt" without the quotes. This will create a text file called log.txt on the root of c:\ with all the errorlogs listed, with their location. Note - This may take a few minutes

Open the text file in wordpad (Notepad may not handle a text file that size) and select "Edit - Replace". Type in "x:\" in the find box where x is the drive steam is on, then put "del x:\" in the replace box, again with x changed to the drive letter steam is on. Hit replace all and wait (Will take some time). Once done, save the file as run.bat onto your c:\

In the command prompt, go to the c:\ and type run.bat and it will delete the log files one at a time, thus stopping it from crashing.

*Warning* When it has created the text file, check that it has only copied in the location of the log files, as it will delete anything you put in that batch file. Check there are exactly 23584 lines in the text file, so that you know it has only picked up the log files, before you edit and run it.

I just typed this up quickly, if anythings unclear, post and I'll try and explain it better.

oh if u delete those error logs i think you should defrag your hard drive
