Like I was just playin' Halo because I was bored and needed something to do after a day at the beach, and I thought to myself, wow. I remember why I used to love this game day in and day out
(especially when I went from fx5200-->9800Pro :dozey: ). I think what brings me back to this game time and time again is the physics. I'm not talking interactive environment, I'm talking semi-realistic vehicles spinning in the air after you jump off a cliff in Timberland and you're shot with a rocket. Alas, fun times must end, and my fun with Halo has come and gone once again. What Halo lacks is interactive environments that Half-Life 2 will/ supposedly posseses. I can't imagine shooting someone with an RPG when they're airborne in a dune buggy and seing how they end up. Also, I think what brings people to CS, a lot of people I may add, is the bullet penetration system. Spectacular. It is so satisfying laying it to 'em old school thru a door with a Deagle. If Call of Duty had this, the game would own. I hope Half-Life 2 has bullet penetration, because it's already got everything else in the physics department. I think what makes games fun is physics.

Throw 20 people into an environment 4 times bigger than a normal HL map, with all the neat physics, a few vehicles, gravity guns ...etc....and you have yourself the recipe for ownage.

People are going to spend hours performing tricks and perfecting stunts.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one mate, I think it's the gameplay aspects, and the team-based strategies that go into every move...

not hours... years

So you think all the games that I grew up with for most of my life are not at all fun because they dont have physics?

I think what makes games fun is physics.

That is just plain the stupidest thing I have heard someone say on this board. I still, to this day, enjoy playing Alex Kidd, Mario Bros, Scroched Earth, among many others.
The point I'm trying to make is that games have been fun for decades, all these fancy physics and big environments dont mean a damn if the game isnt fun.

Ooh, so thats why i always get killed when I'm camping behind a box.I always thought that was a bug or a hack or something.

(dont bash the noob!)

Don't blame him, he's not old enough to be a true gamer :)

I remember the days of old, super mario brothers, tetris, bubble bobble, etc...and those were good times. But I am looking forward to the interactive environments very much so. I'm not the new age fanboy type who say games like FF3 sucked because it had bad graphics. But people should be able to move forward and say that yes, physics can be what make or break a game. I believe most of the fun i will have in HL2 will be with the physics. Now, of course i will enjoy the game for its storyline and battle strategies, but i am a physics buff.

theres a 98% chance of total ownage (and i never use that word) straight out of the box. i gurantee that a lot of mods will come out that will be very fun/lasting

I also play Ski Stunt Simulator more than any other game I have on my computer at the moment... and that game is almost entirely physics. Physics can make a game fun. Do you deny that?

I dont think physics alone can make a game fun. Physics are just a cool little gimmick but the game has to be fun to ply already. Imagine a game where all you do is run around pushing boxes over with absolutely no purpose. It doesnt matter how realistically the boxes fall, that game isnt going to entertain you for long, and it sure as hell isnt going to compell you to spend US$50.

Yes, obviously the game has to have a good concept (no one is saying anything contrary to that)... but gameplay mechanics are tied directly to the physics even if the calculations are as simple as "if x>number make ball switch directions." The core of decent gameplay is a functional physics system that handles whatever the gameplay needs it to do... even in Mario. If you took out the physics you would destroy the gameplay since there would be no movement. In Halo, one of the requirements for their physics engine was to allow the use of vehicles that react realistically. Without a good physics engine they could not have implemented their concept.

Essentially, physics allows gameplay. So, if a game has bad physics (ala Trespasser) it can ruin even a great gameplay concept.

A good enough physics engine (one that performs all tasks required by the concept accurately and efficiently) is a requirement for a decent game... but not a guarantee that it will be a decent game. Is that what you are trying to say? If so, I agree with that.

HL2 deathmatch's popularity will depend on where it's set .... etc.

If it's set in a boxed area (like the original), it will be boring. If it's set in City 17 (totally, the whole city) with a 40 player cap, it'll rock !

With... manipulator...? Mmm... *wets pants*...

I won't need 39 other players to have fun, I still remember the countless hours I've played three or four player deathmatches in Stalkyard... ;)

If the map is good, you can have a great time with just a few players, and I hope HL2 will have as good maps as HL1 had... It'd be very sad if all maps were so big they effectively required some 12-18 players to be enjoyable (as the BF'42 maps).

I would guess that at the very least we will get standard deathmatch and teamplay, which should be a blast with the weapons and physics. But since Valve has wanted to keep the multiplayer as a suprise, it will certainly have more than that.

Say what you want butthat game will F*CKING ROCK BIGTIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

ehm, how can we know if it is goping to own? we know nothing!

Im mainly buying it for the single player. HL DM for me was utter crap.

Utter crap? What did you not like? HLDM was alot of fun, actually is still fun. Play some different maps. Except for crossfire i didn't really like the default maps. There some awesome custom maps out there.

I hope there are objectives to complete in MP.

If you have to capture something and return it to your base, atleast make it a prototype weapon/secret documents etc It feels silly fighting over a flag these days :)

Other than that I like small/medium sized maps, with a few routes, key bottlencks, and attacking/defending stopwatch gampley :)

I don't expect the HLDM to be amazing but i do hope it'll use the time up before the big mods come out.. Thats what HLM in HL1 did for me really. If valve implement varied game types then it may will be a success... Otherwise the HLDM game type will be left for the pro's to master

Dude HLDM rocks. I liked those default maps that had a "suprise" for example crossfire had the nuke, when you hear the alarm you get an "adrenaline rush" Gotta get to the shelter gogogo!!!! :sniper: aaah diee and Buum your safe! And snark pit had those traps. If you add physics, vehicles, Manipulator and who knows what else it will be pure F-U-N :afro:

With the brilliance that is UT2004, Half-Life 2 would have to have a very special multiplayer game in order to compete.

thats more likely to come from the modding community and/or will be seen in TF2
doubt Valve would do something like that.. just MHO of course :p

I may not have been around in the time of Atari, but I was certainly there for the NES, SNES, and so forth. I, to this day, am still a huge Zelda fan (yet I don't own a GameCube) and I remember playing Mario, Metroid Prime, Yoshi :burp: and that on game for NES with the gun- Duck Shoot!! Awesome! :E

As for CS, along with bullet penetration, most people come to CS for its simple interface and teamwork that varies every time.

I don't know where you keep getting this from, I've never once heard anyone say they liked CS because of "bullet penetration"

No one cares about bullet penetration, its more of an annoyance that a cool feature. I think it's a f*cking stupid idea.

Bullet penetration is so tight! That's the reason why I got addicted to CS in the first place. It's more realistic. Do you think Half-Life 2 will have this?

I hope they have modes like CTF and ordered objective type maps (like, turn off power to the lighthouse then steal the boat)

I mean, they said Source allows for multiple riders in vehicles...so, Imagine Coastal with 20 players, playing CTF accross the beach with 2 seater buggies...one seat for the driver, another to control a gun turret (gauss, maybe?)...Mmm. You could have those dock buildings for up close combat or the flag base, then the long strips of beach that you could drive along, with beat up ships and large rocks for decoration/cover. It would be...so...beautiful...*tear*

Anyway, I would love that kinda MP.

There are a lot of things that can make it cool. . . if it gets pulled off.

and seeing as we don't even know what's goign to be in it, I'd have to say let's
"wait and see"

i LOVED half life deathmatch....i remember me and me brother used to mess about on the level with the train and we'd play a game where we had to hijack it off each other...

oh the memories

if they don't include deathmatch in hl2 i think i'll cry

I am fairly confident that it will own. As long as it isn't half-assed *cough*Farcry*cough*, it will definetly be a success.

Even if it doesn't, its still got HL1:S, OP4:S, CS:S, TFC:S (maybe TF2 if its finished) to fall back on.
Its a win-win situation people! :D :D :D :D :D :D

it damn well better.
Im hoping its something like dm/Tf/Battlefield hybrid, with huge stages, vehicles and physics (damn Im hoping they have air vehicles in MP :/ ) and stuff.

but hell.. I probably would be happy with just a room full of barrels and a manipulator gun.

if something as simple as "bullet penetration" turns your crank, wait till you get HL2...
