Well I read some of your posts. I gotta say, this whole source leak thing is quite annoying. Although, if i was ValvE I would publish the game ASAP (given it's complete), WHY? more like why not! well here's the scenario, I am sure most (all) of you know that there are a LOT of Beta or even cracked release version of games out on warez rings before they hit the stores. Just last week, someone offered to make me a copy of Max Payne 2, Remedy got screwed since I understand they dont have a multiplayer option. So whoever gets the cracked version has no need to buy the game => Lost profits!!!

So, Valve should publish as soon as they are able to (I imagine they would have to secure multiplayer from hacks and whatever else) but if they really wanna hit the profits, they gotta publish it before Jan. Beat the hackers to it, get it out before the game gets to everyone's hands and get the extra profit from the people who primarily buy it for the single player!

Remember, more profits mean Valve stay privately held and not pressured by the stakeholders or the parent company, which means, better quality games.

Or maybe everyone should just wait for the game. The game is not done. There would be no reason to postpone the game. Not going to make a profit differance, there will be less competition.

You sound like a used car salesman... or a cheezy advert for home insureence.

I think valve allready know they should bring the game out when its ready you know... they have done it before ;)

N1pple, you're slippery, I just want valve to make more profit, they put it a lot of (good) work, 5yrs is a long time...

so u got a problem with that homes?

so uh, i propose we ban headcrabs from being able to start new threads, like i've done so many times.

Umm...
Why do the mods have to remind everyone about Signature limits? Better yet, why has is gotten to where I feel I need to? Please alter your signature, you don't have to hit ENTER after each sentence.

And about this thread: Don't worry, the game will be out within two months. VALVe would be stupid to pass up a chance at virtually no competition, holiday sales, and the Hl anniversary. VALVe will pull through. And though many will say the recent theft has caused the silence, I highly doubt that. Whenever a theft happens, Dev teams give large, public statements. Whenever a game is close to GOLD & Release, Dev teams ALWAYS go quiet. Wait and see.

Also, whether or not it was actually "Stolen", or released by VALVe, they are benefiting from the recent PR rush. Trust me, the ball is totally in their court.

That doesn't mean it won't be ready, soon. Which I think it is... *grins like an idiot*

There was a guy named kyle2 or something like that in the IRC channel who that the game was done and Vivendi was delaying the game just to increase profits. He was so convinced, despite having no plausible arguments, that he was in a frothing rage with me for disagreeing. But I finally convinced him to agree to apologize to me when it became obvious that he was wrong. Well, where are ya kyle? :)

Valve has already missed out on the chance to be first out of the gate with a lot of next gen features (we've already seen Havok2 in action, already seen some great Dx9 shader effects). That's got to be pretty disappointing to them. They may not garner as many GOTY awards either if they don't make it into this year's running: 2004 will see many games that have as much hype as HL2, similar (and even superior) feature sets, and who knows what games will really shine in play. From a business standpoint, making the holidays is pretty darn important. But that's probably not going to affect Valve: they will delay the game until they are pretty darn sure that it's done to their satisfaction. They've already shown willingness to wager millions on risky ventures like Steam for directions they think are right.

What, and have people whine about buying an unfinished game ?

I thought that you mean release it then patch.. sorry if I misunderstood.

I put this in altsvista babel fish and this is what came out...

what a moron.

So you're telling us that valve should release the game as soon as it's done?? WTF? What did you think they'd just hold onto it for a while? ugh.

I'm pretty sure Valve will release by the end of November. Why? Because if they don't, it will cause them many, many problems.

For example, late November is the start of the rush of holiday shopping, by far the peak time for retailers. If they don't release by late November it WILL cut into their profits.

The longer Valve waits, the more the hype dies down, which means lost sales to excellent games that are already out such as Halo, MP2, and by next week, CoD. Also if they wait longer, people will be less "wowed" by the technology in source such as lifelike graphics, and real world physics, both of which will be the standard of new fps games by mid 2004 probably.

And HL2 has been in development for 5 years! The game can't possibly be far from done. If they still have some minor bugs to squash, just make it gold, since Steam was developed so that patches are available as soon as a fix is developed.

About the only real reason for holding back HL2 that I can see is fixing new secutity holes thanks to the hacker. If this is the issue, then why can't Valve make a quick press release saying "we're fixing up security holes in the source code due to the recent source leak".

In summary, unless Valve wants to make a horrible business decision, they will release HL2 by the end of November, which seems very likely, unless they've been doing nothing for 5 years.

The game is not done, it is very very close but not done. I can't say the forbidden reason that I know this but it is not done. The game is not even optimized and if anyone here has ever worked for a gaming company optimizing is one of the last things done usually with the last 2 months.

sushi, it doesnt matter how much they want to get it out by the holidays, it doesnt matter what profits they'll lose if they dont, the fact is if the game isnt finished, it isnt finished. They're not gonna release a 95% finished product.

Dolos, stop spreading shit. You know no more than anyone else here.

Well well well if someone didn't shit in your cereal today cranky. I'm sorry for making an opinion. I thought that was what forums were all about but I guess not almighty god of forum knowledge. And who ever said I know more then anyone else. I'm sure there are great number of people that would agree with me you sensitive cock(as in rooster) sorry for shitting on your parade god.

jesus what i said was totally unagressive, if a little firm, so grow up and spread your god given 'opinion' somewhere else.

ummm...

piss off and come back when you have something constructive to add.

Stop fighting, please.

I agree with Sushi, on this. I'm not sure it was even meant to be released, in Sept. I mean, seriously, that would have been stupid... compared to a Holiday Release. All Dev Teams try to churn the most hype 1, to 2 months before release. Then, roughly 2 - 3 before the GOLD announcement, they go quite silent. You know what I mean - The images and Trailers stop, updates are halted, etc. Sure, VALVe went through something horrible, recently. But just about every company delivers closure, in this event... By keeping quiet, VALVe has created even more Hype. Now that it's dying down, people are lying in wait, it would be the perfect time to release. Not to mention all of the other great reasons - Christmas, Anniversary, Steam will be optimized, virtually no competition...and they would salvage a lot of credibility.

heh, if you went and bought the game, clicked on the shortcut to start playing it and it crashed no matter what you did, you'd be pretty f.ucking mad.

Sn7, that pic was freakn hillarious, u got real sense of humor!

for the record, i'm interested in quality games, and just so the development noobs know, it's not only about taking time that you get a quality game, it's the funding so you can keep quality games coming! I'm not a 5 yr old as you can see, i have lots of patience, but i have a feeling that most of the people flaming me dont, to you boys, you have a funny way of expressing yourselves!

I also think Sush and Ghost are right, they made good points.

Oh.. and Dr-X grow up, if you read my initial post and those of Sush and Ghost you would know that they may be waiting till an opportune time (like holiday season) or they could be in legal/security sh-t and waiting to get that resolved. So no, a game doesn't necessarily ship as soon as it's done!!

I think what he meant (hopefully) was that if there is just a small bug (ex. Someone's mouth doesn't move in a scripted sequence) then they can just patch it via steam. But if it's a major bug like something that crashes the game frequently, then they'd better fix it quickly.

OMG!OMG! YOUR SIGNATURE IS MORE THAN 4 LINES I'M GONNA EXPLODE!!~!!~!@$!!!!

I'd like it to be released in November. But the fact of the matter is that none of us really know what's going on at Valve. So until we do, all we have is speculation and wishful thinking.

I honestly don't believe it's coming out this year. I know about the Holiday season and the profits etc etc. January maybe, but there are two things that prevent it from being released this year.

1) Condition Zero. I've said this before and I still think it's true. I can't believe they would let two of their games compete with each other. I also don't think they could possibly release HL2 _before_ CZ, a lot of people would just forget about CZ and not buy it. Furthermore, they can't really release HL2 very soon after CZ either, they need some time for CZ to sell first.

2) Steam. Valve are probably optimizing steam right now and getting more bandwitdth etc. CZ will be the first true test whether Steam does what it's supposed to. CZ is the smaller of the two titles and it will function as a sort of "grand rehearsal" before the big thing. I mean seriously, they don't want to be experiencing the same kind of stuff with the launch of HL2 as they did with cs 1.6. It would be a disaster.

God, I hate that site, really I don't see the funny in it.
