Ping the most important part of playing online

if u have a ping 20 thats good because it takes less time to reach the server and back

ping of 200 is not bad but you will get some lagg because it takes longer for you reach the server and back.

how to get low ping

well no. 1

look for servers in the area where u live for instance if u live in australia

look for servers in australia or new zealand servers thats are close by where u live.

N0. dont join servers in america or far away places because you will the worst lagg

connection speed doesnt matter .

if u got 2mps connections wont make a difference the ping in other countries outside australia would be badd.

client commands are mostly used to make the performance of the game better

example
cl_show_splashes [0,1] - If set to 1, splashes in water are shown, if set to 0 they are disabled. Can improve performance if disabled at the cost of realism.

cl_show_bloodspray [0,1] - If set to 1, blood sprays are emitted from bullet impacts on characters. If set to 0, no blood sprays are shown, however blood marks (decals) can still appear. Disabling this can improve performance, but reduces realism.

cl_rate isnt even a source console command......hasn't been around since oooh C.S 1.6.....

deks i've got a 1mb connection and use:

rate 20000
cl_updaterate 70
cl_cmdrate 70

I get no choke unless it gets very hectic, my best advice is to play around with the rates as I've found my rates have depended heavily on the quality of my ISP (with tiscali 'broadband' i used to have to use the default rates since anything more gave me more choke than soft mick. Now I'm with f2s and as you can see, there's been a marked improvement in my ability to communicate with the servers..)
