Half-Life 2 leads the pack with 6 nominations, followed not surprisingly by San Andreas, Katamari Damacy, World of Warcraft, and Doom 3. [br]

The International Game Developer Association will be holding it's fifth Game Developers Choice Awards on March 9th in San Francisco, California. Arguably the most coveted award for game developers, the IGDA lets game industry professionals pick the nominees. [br]

Half-Life 2 is nominated in the following catagories:
 • Best Game
 • Character Design
 • Game Design
 • Technology
 • Visual Arts
 • Writing

Predictions anyone?

Take home all the awards it's nominated in except for one award, which would probably be one of these:

-Best Game
-Game Design
-Technology

Thus, HL2 would have 5 awards.

Between those, I think it'd lose game design. Source is so far beyond what Doom3's engine can do out-of-the-box it's not even funny.

No-ones said Writing yet  Name one game with a better, convincing, real-but-sci-fi storyline? Guess that narrows it down, but seriously, Im pretty sure itll win the Writing Award. Wont be Doom 3 certainly.

EDIT: Why is : - o an embarassed face? :|

Im sorry, but that is just BS. The source engine is miles ahead in terms of physics, outdoor enviroments, facial animation, artilficial intellingence, (Please excuse my spelling)and animation

Hm, I find it interesting how Halo 2 quickly drowned into oblivion.

He said the Source engine was BEYOND Doom 3, not behind.

On a related note; has anyone here read The Making of Doom 3? It certainly does make you realise the potential of the D3 engine. Don't knock it yet. I think there's a lot of potential in it.

the best thing to happen to hl2 was Resident Evil 4 not being released till 2005. That game BLEW AWAY hl2 and the reviews seem to show that.

It'll prolly pwn most of those, i still don't understand why doom 3 is in there, except maybe for lighting. cryengine pwns doom 3 in nearly every respect, and i will be nice enough not to do the hl2 fc debate ;).

Honestly tho i liked the doom 3 characters and ani ation better then hl2, and I have no idea why people tout hl2 ai, its kinda sucktardish, but you can aim your cursor and get npc's to go there, you still can't kill them if they get in your way.

RE4 would have had no effect on HL2 anyway, as they're for entirely different systems, so that part of your argument is fallacious. The rest of it is entirely subjective.

About the RE4 comment. Apples and oranges.

Wow, Halo 2 isn't running for GOTY... weird. I guess these guys realized what such a bad game Halo 2 was.

Magna Suit Larry for best "Writing"??? What am I missing here...

Halo 2 isnt for pc...

Katamari Damacy will win for best Game Design. Half life's game design was not too far from the mold of standard FPS's. Katamari Damacy on the other hand was extremely unique and defines a new game mechanic/style that no game has done to date. Through its unique gameplay and level design there really are no other contenders in my mind for game design. the other awards on the other hand are entirely up for grabs.

Game Design doesn't just mean uniqueness of gameplay. HL2 may have been Just Another FPS, but the overall design was a cut above the rest.

Half Life 2 was a cut above the rest
Game Design encompasses everything that defines the gameplay and the product as a whole. While half life 2's gameplay was fantastic, there were moments that showed its lack of polish, a fairly standard problem with PC games. Katamari on the other hand is a game where the gameplay is engaging, challenging and well balanced all of the time.
Obviously to debate this we both need to have played the said titles, have an understanding on what makes a good game and agree to what makes a good game.

If this was divided between each platform, obviously hl2 would win for pc, and katamari for ps2, but put together, it is my "opinion" that katamari Damacy is a superior product to the rest of the nominees. Now that's my opinion, and yes, in my opinion its uniqueness is what will help it win the award whether you agree with it or not.

Please don't hit me for digging this old topic up, but the results are announced today. Best of luck Valve!
