IGN speculates about new XCOM game...

I'd really just love to get a game that mjixes FPS with strategic management, there was an X-Com project like that in development many many years ago, but it got cancelled after Microprose got economic troubles.

Just let it turn based. X-Com would not be the same without turns and strategic planning. Real time will simply disrupt the whole concept. But I know that this will be turned into an action-strategy game :(

wow a new game of my most beloved series.

haven't read the article but i'm sure tey'll dumb it down so much it won't be even funny.

real time worked nice especially in apocalypse. we need to worry about the things they'll throw away due *khm* less bright people

I'd prefer it to play EXACTLY like the original. I don't like the pseudo turn-based systems that copycat games use. Where you tell everyone where to go then hit a button and all the characters do their thing at the same time. I like moving one guy, having him actually do what I tell him, when I tell him... then going on to the next guy.

For me to get interested, the game would have to have all of the following...
1. fully destructable environments
2. base building, research and manufacturing are absolute necessities
3. the rpg elements need to stay in tact

I would be perfectly happy with a non-3d, sprite based game, with a static camera. In a way that almost makes the original better in my opinion.

I would love to see one that stays true to the original in pretty much every way as far as gameplay goes. If they do make it a shooter, something like swat 4 with the management and rpg aspects of xcom would be pretty fun.

I was thinking, if they decided to really change things up and make it a shooter or fps squad based type game or whatever.... that's fine, but include the original game modified to run in windows. Nothing too time consuming like adding new textures/sounds/gameplay/etc. That way people like me would still buy it and newcomers to the series would get the best of both worlds. I wouldn't be interested in the fps version of things, but I'd buy a $50 dollar game just to get the original back and avoid dosbox type stuff.

I myself would really like a X-Com on the S2 engine, imo the best modern turn-based engine, it's being used for JA3.

now that would be the only way i'm willing to accept a first person xcom

Man, its great to see some other fans here that just want the original experience all over again.

Totally agree with all that you said here. I'm unsure of what graphics enhancements they should add on. Having it fully 3d with physics (see Essence Engine) sounds cool in theory, I just dunno how that will translate into a good feel in the game.

Then go play the original. Really now there's no point in asking for an exact copy of the original because it won't happen. I don't mind what they do in terms of gameplay as long as they keep all the story aspects in check I will enjoy it. Meanwhile you should all go and play some UFO2000. Let's not forget that the original X-Com really didn't have a plot. i mean, x-com was 'defend earth', here's a base. In other games you can have same everything, but just add more plot, X-COM not so much. I mean, they did anyway a bit with the other games, but still and aftershock/afterlight are pretty close. Personally, i quite like aftershock with the whole Laputa thing. Base management not as good but you where forced to expand which is good.

Just think about it what large publisher in their right mind would develop a game to target a niche market?

There are so many flaws with what you just said. You are talking about game logic, the engine behind any game is more than just the logic used to decide how the game should play. I mean the devs could write up the game rules in lua and strap it on to any random engine they liked.

I guess but still, S2 is by turn-based squad-based gamers considered the best modern engine, hence why it's being used for Jagged Alliance 3 now, it's 3D, pretty good looking, dynamic shadows, lightning etc, physics, bullet penetration, and FULLY destructible environments.

But yes, you are right to some extent they could write up rules in LUA and strap it onto another game engine, but I reckon it'd be better if they went for a turn-based game, to go for an engine that was custom-made for that specific purpose, and has already been succesfully used in several games.:)

Anyway, anyone who prefers the "After" games over "X-Com" is a grade A j?vel.:(

FYI; I liked all the After games and played through'em all, but they still weren't nearly as satisfying to me as the X-Com games.

I'll look into this, although I'm sad to say I didnt find the second one all that compelling, specifically because the people you commanded were predetermined.

The engine sounds good though. Hows it compare to Essence, or even Unreal? (Im pretty sure Unreal was used for a strategy game before)
